8. I hate the elitist otaku -- of yeah, these exist in a bad way -- who insist they're not. I'm a gamer, have been one for years, anime came by extension of that. I cosplay. Sure Japan's a pretty place and is on my list of places I want to visit ... but I don't get this obsession people have with it. Whenever some elitist otaku who thinks they know Japanese wants to lecture me on the kanji or how the name is something else in Japanese and pronounced differently or whatever, I just politely explain to them that at least I don't pretend to know all things Japan because I might enjoy a few anime series. I'm beginning to believe that there are fewer and fewer people like me out there these days. Can't you enjoy something without having to become consumed with pretending to know its culture and language?

Yes, although like you I'm starting to think our numbers are dwindling.

They are. -_- I learned a lot about Japan because I had a few extra elective slots to fill while I was at college (and one can only take so much art history), but ... it's not my obsession, not by any means. There's just a few things about its culture that I enjoy, same as I do for France, Haiti, Russia, etc. It's good to learn about the world. :-)

I completely agree. Enjoying some anime series does not make a person obsessed with all anime, in general. I try to relate it to other genres to people, "Just because you thought -this- movie was funny, do you just love all comedy, regardless of story?"

I have to admit, I'm interested in learning Japanese, which was started because of my interest in anime - but it was the interest in anime that made me realize how interesting a language it was, for the actual language. And I'm just a language enthusiast, to begin with. Japanese is only one of too many languages that I want to learn... And most likely, never will.

As obsessed as I can become with particular stories I enjoy, it's not anime exclusive, and doesn't cover anime in general - i.e. just because I like anime I'm obsessed with Japanese culture. Admittedly, I'd like to learn more...

My point?
Thank you for this comment, I think it summed up my thoughts rather nicely on the topic.
