Wait, what? In that alternate future episode, Chandler and Monica end up together even though she never lost the weight.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to say this exact thing! I just rewatched that episode. Chandler was the one who pursued her at the end, because he realized he loved her and the sex was amazing. It was surprisingly sweet. I mean, you had to get through a lot of obnoxious fat jokes to get there, but it was there!

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought, as well.

Man, I hate that episode. I don't understand Chandler's sulkiness.

Initially, what he knows is that Monica once accidentally cut off part of his toe.

After hearing the story, he knows that it was because he called her fat.

...How does that lead to him acting as though his feelings have been gravely wounded? I felt awful for Monica during that flashback, and I really don't understand Chandler's reaction in the present at all.

Anyway, I just kind of try to ignore the general weirdness of that episode.

Whoops, I meant to reply to the main thread.

I think he assumed the knife thing was a complete accident, then he learned that it was part of a plot to teach him a lesson/humiliate him.

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because it is a known fact that people never, EVER change. Everyone who is ever shallow and rude is destined to forever be that way.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
He was an asshole in his younger days for sure, but you can't blame someone for not being attracted to obese people. He was attracted to modern Monica, but not old Monica... nothing wrong with that. And modern Chandler was not an asshole like he was before. I don't really see the problem.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
HDU not like chandler and monica

you're acting like people actually gave a shit about the couples on friends...

"i don't care about this, therefore no one else does! look at me all not caring. i don't care so much, i will comment on this secret to say how much i don't care! lol i am so cool!"

People change OP. Chandler may not have been the most mature of the group, but he at least got far enough that he would have been able to see past Monica's weight as shown in The One That Could Have Been.

Chandler may not have been the most mature of the group

Ditto all of this. And to me the really interesting thing is if you compare that flashback to the pilot, to the finale and everything in between, Chandler is the one character who seemed to grow up into the most functional of adult in the most stable of relationships of the lot (even if Monica did turn into a crazy caricature of herself).

I'm inclined to chalk most of that up to his being young and stupid and pretty insecure himself. I don't like all the fat jokes at all, but he was what, 19 in those scenes? He's not going to be very mature and have good priorities yet. I don't think he fell in love with her for just shallow reasons, they had a real connection and strong friendship.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't quite recall the episode where he turned Monica down while she was fat. Wasn't that a scenario where his girlfriend really showed up in the end? And did he even really know Monica at the time? Maybe what you take for shallowness is just him getting to know her and realize that WHO SHE WAS, not what she looked like, was what he loved.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I they're talking about a flashback episode where it was thanksgiving or whatever and Monica was flirting with Chandler but he wasn't into it because she was over weight and then he like...cut off his toe? Or something

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. They're referring to the flashback Thanksgiving ep where Chandler has just met Monica and doesn't want to be left alone with Ross's fat sister. Then the next year he's attracted to her because she's thin. But both of those Chandlers are pretty different from the guy who married her. And they did do that ep where he wound up with her even when she was fat. But he was never presented as a guy who didn't go for conventionally pretty women.

When he rejected her the first time, he barely knew her personality and was a shallow teenager (with issues of his own). It took years for him to actually take a serious romantic interest on her. Their relationship, you know, developed and shit. And they would have ended together even if she hadn't lost weight.

[identity profile] hermyfan.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure he wasn't suddenly into her the minute she was skinny. Take the earlier seasons of friends - there's almost no signs of him liking her then, and she was thin.

[identity profile] divorcer.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I started writing something long and complicated but OP, while you don't have to like Mondler, know that when Chandler called Monica fat, he was a stupid teenager. He wasn't even thinking. While as an adult, this much about him hadn't really changed (watch TOW Heckles Dies), it was something so small and insignificant to him that he didn't even remember having made the comment. In The One That Could Have Been, it's shown that Chandler can fall for fat Monica, soooooooo it's not unreasonable to believe that when he says he wouldn't care if she gained that weight back? He means it. He's changed.

And hey, the only reason she lost the weight was to get revenge. She would show him that 'Ross' fat little sister' could be hot and if he was SO shallow she needed to lose all the weight to do it/for him to notice it, Monica was totally up for it. She needed to win and to humiliate him.

[identity profile] azure15.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like Mondler because it turned Monica into a shrill bitch and Chandler into a simpering doormat.

Also the string of episodes of them sneaking around like fourteen year olds were just ridiculous, especially when poor Joey was painted out as a pervert just to protect their stupid secret.

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, but as others have said, Chandler's perspective at the time is at least depicted as messed up. What I don't like about it is the added information that Monica lost weight - probably through an ED, since she did it within less than a year - based on Chandler's comment. TPTB made up for that in "TOW Could Have Been", but I would have liked the reason for Monica's weight loss to have been for herself, not to get back at some guy she barely knew and to, in narrative terms, provide more ~proof for the ship. And I say all that as someone who likes M/C.

All the talk about Chandler changing and him liking Monica even when she was fat in "The One That Could Have Been" is fine, but I'm sort of with the OP on this. I like Chandler and Monica on the show, but I know in real life I could never trust and give my heart to someone who said those things to or about me so their relationship on the show baffles me a bit.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people in real life probably wouldn't be so trusting with someone who cut off part of their toe all thanks to a revenge plot, either.
