I think the author of the novels said in an interview that Shion does have romantic feelings towards Nezumi.
I myself have only read the novel until volume 5 but it does get pretty Ho Yay...

Are the novels translated somewhere or you read it in Japanese? Just curious.

Yeah I read them in Japanese. I've heard that there's a Chinese translation of it, but don't know about English...

Oh, do you have the novels? Did you buy them or were they available for download somewhere? Also, which edition do you have, YA! or Kodansha bunko? (YA! is the one with the fugly covers.)

I'm just curious because I want to get (preferrably buy but download is fine too, damn shipping fees) the novels myself, but I don't understand why the YA! edition costs twice as much as the Kodansha bunko edition while having the same number of pages.

The only difference, as best I can tell by flipping through, is that the YA versions have slightly larger type and more furigana. There aren't any relevant illustrations.

(I bought them, so no help on whether or not you can download them anywhere.)

Thanks a lot for the info! Wow, do more furigana and an ugly cover really justify the price being almost twice as much as the bunko edition? o_O

Just out of curiosity, how much furigana do the two editions have? If I lend the books to a lower-intermediate speaker will he be able to handle them?

The YA books are also physically larger, with sturdier paper, but not getting the ugly illustrations is probably a bonus. Addition by subtraction.

The furigana in YA editions is spotty, but the language isn't terribly complicated. You can see in a sample of Volume 9 here:

The pocket editions, on the other hand, have very little. (A word here and there, I suppose where they felt it could be confused.) I guess it depends on how much kanji a person feels they really know, which edition is best.

I'm pretty ambivalent about whether they have a romance between the two, but I will be disappointed it it turns into a Romantic Plot Tumor and takes focus away from the dystopia part of the story.

Wait... are people actually expecting a heterosexual story here? o_o;

Not sure the anime will deliver (though I certainly hope it does!), but the light novels do have quite a bit more going on... ;)

I hear that it WILL become canon, so those people are just gonna be pissed. But then, to be perfectly honest, it's not like the production staff was hiding anything. It was pretty hoyay from the get-go.

The way I see it, it's a scifi anime that happens to have gay characters. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, i like that andI prefer it to the "HE RAPED ME AND NOW I LOVE HIM KAWAII DESU" animus that are yaoi centric. I like my gay characters to have actual depth and be more than just fap material.

I thought the light novels ended at 9? Spoiler: In any case, I seriously doubt there'd ever be more than allusions to a relationship between them else the No. 6 light novels would have been marketed as BL from the beginning.

Frankly, I dislike both opinions, because the plot should be what you judge a show by, not the characters' sexualities. Yes, their interaction makes my little fangirl heart happy, but the reason I prefer No. 6 over the hundreds of Rape is Love cliche yaoi stories out there is I love the sci fi setting (the Ho Yay is just a great bonus).

But the people who won't even give it a chance because it's "stupid yaoi shit" makes me rage.

Oh my goodness, this sounds awesome. And it's a novel series? Even better. EXCUSE ME WHILE I SCOUR THE INTERNET LOOKING FOR NON-EXORBITANT SHIPPING FEES.

While I enjoy the show enough that don't plan on dropping it however it does turn out, I must admit I'd be infinitely more happy if it turns into a 'gay love story'. :)
