There's never one single way to listen to a song. It might have been written with god in mind but you can listen to it as a general love song if you want. There's no rule against it.

I've listened to these songs and replaced "God" with half of the OTP. In my high school years it was probably my X-Files fandom, so the song would end up being about Scully saving Mulder. yesssss.

I feel like that was the wrong way to listen to it, by the standards of the song writers, lol.
