Ugh, that happened to me once. Just one song, thankfully, that I had picked up somewhere and quickly deleted because of the creep factor. Shame, though. It fit really well.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
What was it, though? And what pairing was it for? One relevant to my interests?

Meh, we've all done that. :D I have a song for one of my m/m OTPs that I later discovered is about an unwanted pregnancy and possible abortion. Oops.

That happened to me too, and all I could think was "Fuck god, my ship is better". Whoops.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
There's never one single way to listen to a song. It might have been written with god in mind but you can listen to it as a general love song if you want. There's no rule against it.

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, it's Christian rock? The genre tends toward songs that have a sort of double-meaning making them more accessible to a secular audience. You shouldn't feel bad for misinterpreting.

(still pretty awkward I guess though)

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
You can interpret songs however you want! Even if it was intended as a religious song, if it's objectively ambiguous, no one can judge you for not initially seeing it that way. :D

I mean, if there was no possible interpretation but the one that was intended, would anyone have songs for their fics/OTPs/favorite characters/whatever? Because seriously, I have my playlists, but I don't think there are any songs out there that were expressly written to glorify ATLA crack pairings... *points to icon*

If you liked the song then what's the problem, there are no subliminal holy roller messages in songs about god. At least I hope there aren't.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
...lol i hate sneaky religious music

[identity profile] bride-of-lister.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
An FST I downloaded once used Placebo- Blind as a song for Dean and his mother issues. Unfortunately that song is about constantly wanking off about someone you lust rather than literally removing someone from the ceiling.

That said, some of the best FST songs I've ever seen have been taking a song really literally or twisting the original intent.
ext_81845: kai shiden w/ an awkward expression, from the manga gundam: the origin (awkward)

All I can think of while reading this secret is that episode of South Park where Cartman becomes a Christian pop star and just changes the words to already-existent love songs so that he's singing "Jesus" instead of "girl". LOL.

Why feel bad, anon? I'm moderately Christian, and one of the things I love most about Christian rock is that they're either gender neutral, and as such can apply wonderfully to slash pairings, or are explicitly written to a guy! I've made an all Christian rock fanmix for one of my pairings (Dean/Castiel) =) Embrace it!

[identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
In my head, the album is Florence + The Machine "Lungs," the "offending" song is "You've Got the Love," and the OTP is Katniss/Peeta.

Sufjan Stevens...

Songs about love of god and love songs do often sound very similar.

[identity profile] ivanolix.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
This happens to me ALL THE TIME

[identity profile] roll-soul.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
That happened to me somewhat recently, with Hero by Skillet. It's technically about Jesus and being saved and stuff, but I still associate it with a character going on a psycho killing spree in my main RP-verse. (For those curious who'd know what I'm talking about: Maverick Zero.)

*shrug* Like was said, songs can be objectively interpreted. Don't let the "real" meaning bog you down, especially if it's so perfect for what you put it with first.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure it's not Pete Townsend's "Let My Love Open The Door," but it might as well have been, and I think that one works better if I interpret it as being about human love. Just so you have another opinion here.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Happens to me a lot as well, a lot of Lifehouse and Relient K songs tend to do this.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Damn Christians and their music...

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
You can replace references to God, Jesus and religion in most religious songs and make it about OTPs/pairings.

I went to a Christian middle/high school where we often had to go to chapel service where they played this type of music, and twice a year there would be a chapel service that would be ALL religious music (40 minutes). I made the songs about my OTPs. It's how I kept myself sane all those years.

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an atheist. I see A LOT of nice/cool A:TLA music videos which use Christian rock- like Red and Skillet in particular (though I hear the latter made the jump to full on secular). I didn't even KNOW they were until I looked them up. I was midly ticked at first but in the end I was all "Meh. I'll listen to these AMVs how I want.". Good thing about them is that they're damn vague and can be vaguely alluded to songs which are not romantic and kind of kick ass (for videos just celebrating like a show or whatever, not just for romantic pairings), and given the prevelance of romantic only songs well that can be kind of nice. Granted for a real secular band in that area, One Republic is also nice for me. Though Lighthouse can be nice too, and even be used in friendship songs.

All the same THIS skillet song is kind of... disturbing to me. (I... think its religious...? I hope so, if its supposed to be a secular song, excuse me ew.) It kind of feels like some STALKER or weirdo just waiting for a moment of weakness to strike someone so they'll love them to me- someone who doesn't know how much of a CREEP they're being. It feels actually pretty threatening all and all for the person the song could be for in a real life situation from the persective of said stalker/weirdo. The person singing it think it's genuine love. I know what they are originally going for but still- taking a secular interpretation of this with regular people and humans on both sides of the equation?

SCARY AS ALL HELL.

This would make a good song for a creepy slightly messed up pairing in any case.

I once saw it for a kataang pairing though and while I think it was well edited given the fact Kataang is fluff with some angst thrown in I was all D: when I was watching it a bit. It just seems so... wrong and not kataang. Too dark for them certainly.

Ever watch Reservoir Dogs? What that movie did for the song "Stuck in the Middle with You," is something you can definitely aim for in a fanmix.

If it makes you feel any better, two of my all-time favorite songs, one of which is an absolutely beautiful love song and the other of which is more of just a life is beautiful song, are about/inspired by the songwriter's adoration and admiration for God...or Krishna, as the case may be.
I take them on both levels--a celebration of God (whatever name He/She/They/It wears) and a celebration of the human spirit--be it in the form of romantic love or any other you chose. :)
