You seem aware that your discomfort with your friend is wrong and irrational, so I don't think it's fair to call you a massive douche. Now you should work on getting over your feelings, and then maybe you won't feel as bad about the slash thing either.

This. If OP were aware of it, and totally fine with their feelings, that would be a whole other story. But being a little bit uncomfortable and hyper aware and not liking that? No. And I am assuming here that if you are okay with slash, then you do not have any moral/political issues with anyone being gay.

It's called not being used to something, and in OP's case, it also sounds like the fact that she uses fiction involving his sexuality is making it worse.

It should pass with time. If you find it doesn't, maybe head to a PFLAG meeting. Talk to more people /in person/ about it, or listen to them speak.

Or in her case I was taking my cues from what OP said

1) That OP did not express any actual "I hate the gays" in their secret

2) That they seem surprised that she is uncomfortable

3) That they're reading the slash


I am torn between cynical and optimistic a lot of the time, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I can't help but try to problem solve, and when someone has a problem, it's best to try and HELP not jump down their throats. I find with some of the things I do, it's the best approach to any problem, even when I want to go "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!", all up in their face. (I am a brilliant filterer)

I guess it's that 1) slash is primarily written as fap material for women by women, and 2) the most disgustingly homophobic people I've ever met in my life were slash fangirls (at least the creepy church people in Podunk Jesustown were in-your-face about it rather than insidious and fetishistic). I'm more inclined to think the OP is the type of slasher that gets off on the "forbidden" and "exotic" nature of slash, but thinks real gay people are wrong/gross/etc. because of that last line: "And I also feel like a massive douche because I'm not fully comfortable around him, and yes, this is about his sexuality." The OP said before that that they feel weird about reading slash when they have a gay friend, so unless they hail from the Reduncy Department of Redundancy, there are few other ways to really take that last part.
