You should probably learn to grow a thicker skin there and take criticism a little better.

And if people are saying "it's not clear" than obviously your text wasn't plain enough for them. But there's no need to please everyone. Just sayin'...

There's a difference between taking criticism and being bashed, though, and OP seems to be describing the second. The secret even says that they're bitching quickly devolved into personal attacks, which... yeah. That's not criticism anymore.

What bothers me is that if the people snarking about the OP never did it to their face, then OP had to go looking for it somewhere. If you go hogging for piranha, I don't think anyone should feel sorry when you come up a few fingers short.

Caveat: I only feel sorry for them if a "friend" linked them to it. Because that's an awfully shitty thing to do.

"If you go hogging for piranha, I don't think anyone should feel sorry when you come up a few fingers short."

Loved this line so much I actually wrote it down on a post-it. <3

Thanks, heh. It's the most apt description I can think of. If you're actively seeking this stuff out, I'm not going to feel sorry for you when you find it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't criticism, but it also wasn't meant for OP to look at in the first place.

God, I'm really surprised at how many people are acting like they've never seen a bad artwork or fic and laughed about it with their friends.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-22 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
If the snarkers really didn't intend for the OP to ever see it, they'd be chatting about it through PMs or IM or email or something. Anything written in a public place = not private. Not private = doesn't matter who it was "intended" for.

[identity profile] lulzatyou.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, it's as good as private if it's posted in places that the person being snarked about does not visit or wouldn't be aware existed. They won't find it unless they seek it out (often by doing a vanity search, and if you have enough of an ego to actively search out your screenname just to see what people are saying about you, I think you kind of deserve to be knocked down a few pegs).

Fact is, if nobody said to the OP's face, then OP likely went looking for it. And depending on where it was posted, there are only a handful of reasons the OP would go there (either they're looking for things other people say about them for Cthulhu knows what reason, or they were going there to anonymously bitch about someone else). Just about all of them warrant finding not-so-nice comments at directed at him or her.

not the op but a friend

(Anonymous) 2011-07-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
op did not go looking for it. op was sent a link to it.

and it turns out that the comments made about the op and her fic by these assholes popped up just fine on a google search for op's rare pairing, so yeah. anyone who googled the pairing would have seen the bashing and the comments, so your "it was meant to be priiiiiiiiiiiivate" is just completely fucking wrong.

Sorry, not taking the word of a suspiciously obsessive anon who can't give up a thread that's a few days stale. Try harder next time, OP.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
When a commenter attempts to give criticism, but the author takes it the wrong way and becomes defensive, I understand why it quickly devolves into personal attacks. Of course, a mature commenter would just get up and leave, but I don't really expect maturity online. The TL;DR nature of this secret tells me OP is taking this very personally and I am more inclined to believe it began with a simple overreaction.

Granted, yeah, some people can be pretty nitpicky with their concrit, but that's one way how you learn.
