It was a anime fans meet up (we usually have once a month) even if the people are divided in smaller groups of friends, and three girls were doing ganguro. It wasn't the first time I saw people doing ganguro, but it was definitely the worst

Nobody does it in Japan any more unless you're doing it for the attention because it phased out. IDK about the west though. D:

Ugh, I hate when non-Japanese people try to do ganguro. It worked in Japan and by Japanese people, because of the context, as it's ugliness was meant as rebellion to Japanese beauty ideals (not some deep thing, but there was a purpose to it beyond "let's look silly just because!"). Without that, it's just a bunch of ridiculous looking people in clown makeup.

Ganguro has it's origins and it has it's place. Out of context, though, it really doesn't make much sense, and more than anything it just looks like said Westerners don't know the history of the style they're trying to portray. But then, TBH probably .01% of people who would see them would even understand what they're trying to do, so.
