I wouldn't blame the fandom, I would blame the people who chose to make the two slashable men white. Slash fandom likes young, pretty men and the other two characters just don't fit into that category.

(You might have a point if Louis were in L4D2.)

Great characters who are not young, pretty men are usually not the focus of slash fandom no matter what race they are.

Did you misspeak this by accident? I'm just trying to fathom how the creators making two young men is somehow their "fault" for some of the fandom shipping them together all the time. Is it just because they're two white men?

Louis was young and attractive, and he's in plenty of slash. Honestly, the creators have done a pretty good job representing PoC in the L4D games, IMO.

uh I think that was anon's point? a wonderful female character or a wonderful male character over 50 is not going to star in slash. they're just not? it has nothing to do with race and it doesn't mean they're not great. but they're not what slashers focus on.

same as a wonderful gay character or wonderful character over 50 is not going to star in het. because they're not what het fans focus on.

the youth thing is big in all fandoms regardless of gender or race, too.

Except Anon is saying it's the creators fault, not the fandom, for the slash, which makes no sense to me. The creators are making other awesome characters, it's just that those characters are not what people generally want to write/draw slash of; and that's not the creators fault, really.

Does Nick, age 35, count as a young pretty man? Honestly, Louis and Francis were pretty well designed to be slashed. It kinda worked, too. You can't blame Valve for varying their characters. And considering the cliche stereotypes they were going for, the designs they went with in the end really did make a lot of sense. They made Ellis a pretty young man because... well, who would really want to be a middle-aged beer-belly redneck? And they made Nick a suave not-so-young man to fit the image of the conman who seduces stupid young brides and steals their husbands' money. Much like Sawyer in Lost.

... Come to think of it, the early designs for Left 4 Dead 1 (http://left4dead.wikia.com/wiki/File:Concept-survivors1.jpg) were far less kind to the slash fans... They gave us a lot of fanservice back then, too........ with Louis AND Francis.

30s is young enough when a lot of the fandom is in their 20s. Now if Nick had been 40+ that would have deterred a lot of the slash.

I'm not blaming Valve for varying the characters, I'm saying it would be more logical for OP to blame Valve for not giving us another Louis instead the fans for taking what they did give us in the field of slashable men and running with it.

35 isn't that old, honestly.

I think Valve does a pretty good job with the character representations. Yeah, they're cliche character types (i.e. the Gambler, the Mechanic, the Coach, the Producer), but they're not all white men.
