I really, really don't understand what is supposed to be attractive/cute/clever/empowering/whatever-the-fuck about either look. They both make you look significantly dumber and are alarmingly infantilizing. Also, really ugly.

Is "infantilizing" the new catch-all term for "fashion I don't like"? I heard it bandied around here an awful lot, sometimes in contexts where it kinda makes sense and sometimes in ones which DON'T.

No idea as to its trendiness. Not a word I use often. Seemed the right one for these affectations considering the puffed-up cheeks, pouty lips, etc -- features common on infant faces.

I for one always thought the duck-face lip-pout thing was trying to smile cutely without showing off fucked up teeth. Not saying it succeeds, just how it seems to me.

I just assumed it was chicks not knowing how to pout sexily. Or they think exaggerated kissy faces are sexy and suggestive. I've known plenty of chicks who definitely did not have bad teeth, and would smile normally in other pictures, who nonetheless would regularly go into duck-lips posing.

I just know that the people that consider it empowering is because it was originally a rebellion against the traditional ideals of Japanese beauty and femininity that Japanese women were held to. People do it as extreme as possible to really make that statement.
