But the thing is that it sounds, from what I've seen, that the idea that ganguro is a rebellion was just a retroactive justification for some really horrible fashion choices. Your explanation makes it just a bit worse for me, because originally I thought it was just a bit of ludicrous fun and now that I know it's apparently post-modern it's sort of spoiled for me.

Sorry for making it worse for you; it COULD be retroactive justification, especially since ganguro came after the style that really was the main rebellion which was the kogal style. I mean, at this point it's hard to know what the first people who did it were really thinking. This is just what I've heard, and I just think it's fascinating.
This is coming from someone who did NOT see the appeal in kogal/ganguro styles at all, thought it was really ugly, and then read further into it.
