I AGREE COMPLETELY.
Ken is not some weak, plain, lovestruck BORING idiot. But adding to all of that, what really bothers me is when he's downplayed simply because his past isn't considered as "terrible and angsty" as the rest. Or people just add angst to make him "important". I mean, especially later on, he's got such potential to play with his character (what with the drama CDs) and...yes.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

The thing so many people miss when it comes to Ken and his angst is that it's in the PRESENT, not the past. He's the one that suffers the most from the life of killing, the one that eventually SNAPS because of it. Yohji goes nuts because of Asuka. Aya somehow becomes more stable the longer he does it, and Omi grew up in it and suffers no guilt at all.

And after all that, I still wonder why Ken ends up being portrayed as he does. I really don't get where people get the things to make him like he is (like what that icon says, which I love by the way). Where DID some of this stuff come from? Jeez.
You know, the discussion of this secret is bringing me back to this series so much! I'm really glad this was a secret! Now I wish I didn't have to miss Otakon considering Tomokazu Seki will be there.

You can thank the author of the secret for the icon; she made that too ^_^ As far as where it comes from, I think it's just immature writing, and people not yet understanding -how- to write characters ICly, so they draw largely on their own feelings and reactions of how they think a person should be expected to respond.

It's disappointing to miss him, but I'm sure it won't be the last con he attends :) I'd have liked to attend but I decided on Yaoi-con instead. And hey, getting back into the fandom is good!

Yes, we've been commenting back and forth. I also know that at least for myself, I got into the series when I was pretty young (somewhere from 13 to 15 maybe?). It was one of the earlier series I got into, and my second series I can think of, that I got into after I got into yaoi (Gundam Wing introducing me, of course). So there are probably a lot of young fans out there that are writing. Not that it's bad, but it might have a hold on the quality.

I've never been to a Yaoi-con, but I hope to attend someday. I hope he comes to another east coast con. @_@ Arg. And yes! That it is!

FYI, I've added two extra frames to that icon since I uploaded the version you're using. (They're now point 11.) I remembered something else I see Ken do in badfic all the time which makes no damn sense, namely act like a sexist ass to the random Sues who show up: he's always the one who tells them they totally can't be an assassin because they have boobs. I'm guessing it's because he's not one of the 'cute' ones and so it's perfectly all right for him to be a misogynist, because he's, like, totally not a potential love interest and hey, he likes sport - of course he's a macho idiot! This strikes me as odd since he treats the women he marks time in the same way he does men and in fact barely even notices they're female unless they make it painfully obvious, and is therefore about as non-sexist as you can get.

... so I'm posting with it now, so you can take the new version if you so desire.

Poster of #8 here. I was 'outed' on page 1, so I'm not bothering to reply anonymously. And God, I am glad I'm not alone.

This may be a personal thing, but I feel that Ken's childhood was pretty rotten, all things considered, and I feel it's almost more affecting for being, at least up until Kase got involved, messed up in an utterly ordinary way. His issues are small-scale, entirely domestic, affect nobody but himself and - again, this is his early childhod I'm talking about, not the Kase stuff - they aren't actually anybody's fault. Things like that just happen sometimes and there's nobody to blame and nothing anybody can do about it. It just happens.

I really hate it when people give Ken a Mary-Sue-Riffic abusive past. It's pretty obvious from the Drama CDs that his family cared for him. He wouldn't have the issues he does if he'd been abused.

If fangirls just thought about it they'd realize how goddamn awful what Kase did to him was. Nobody gets that good at any sport without effectively devoting their life to it. His life was utterly destroyed by someone he thought he could trust. That, to me, is worse than what happened to Aya. At least Aya knows who to blame for what happened to his family and never believed him to be anything other but Evil with a capital EVIL. Ken trusted Kase. His past is easily as messed up as Aya's if not more so - but because he's not emotastically wallowing in misery he's somehow got it easy? Excuse me, fandom, but WHAT.

Yes, yes! And I never see anyone really take into account the future of them all. I mean, you can tell in Weiss Side B even more. Ken can't really DO anything should Weiss split up. Ran CAN go back to his sister, Youji can (and does) start new, Omi has his whole life ahead of him to pursue what he wants since he's so young, but Ken! Ken had his life set up, a life which he was passionate about, and then it was pulled away from him. He's believed to be dead, so he can't really jump back into a normal life, let alone pursue soccer again.

... actually, I once wrote a fic set just before the timejump in Kapitel which mentioned Ken's utter inability to find anything to do with his life that didn't have something to do with killing people, if I'm allowed to mention that. Before I wrote that, though, I didn't even think about it; I only realized it because I wrote the fic. You're totally correct: there's absolutely nothing else Ken can do with his life. Aya chooses to stay away from his sister - he didn't have to, but whatever his solid-gold reasons for it, he chose to go back. Omi manages to get away. Likewise Youji, even if it took total retrograde amnesia to manage it - he's still out. Ken? Ken is not only legally dead, life has equipped him for playing soccer (and he can't do that) or killing people. Basically, he's stuck.

I don't think his following Aya had that much to do with any burning desire for Aya's company over the rest of his team - by that point, Aya is absolutely all he had left. Omi's following in his family's footsteps by becoming a corporate bastard and Youji might as well be dead. Given that Ken has abandonment issues like whoa, I think he'd have followed anybody - and what else was he supposed to do? He couldn't exactly stay in prison for the rest of his natural life.

I need to go searching for some more Ken fan fictions again just to read up on his character some more. It's been SO LONG, but I still say he's one of my favorite characters of all time. He always stood out to me, so I really wondered why people downgraded him so much. I was never an Omi fan. Aya's alright, Youji's cooler, but Ken was always my favorite.

I never got to read Weiss Side B, but I did read a lot of the drama CD translations. I should go back and read them again. About all I know of Ken in Side B is that he likes to cook and wears a really awesome mask. Anything else big?

Oh am I so, so, gleefully pleased to find others that not only agreed, not only who are KEN FANS, but just WK fans in general. They're all so hard to find these days. Sane ones, esp. ;;; ; 3;

And I agree with everything that's been/being said in these comments, so I'll refrain from repeats. XD;

But... LOVE! ♥

Maybe I should look back in on the fandom to see how it's doing. XD I'm so happy about this fandom secrets post and this conversation has been so fun! I'm glad you've found some glee in it all? :D

I agree with you agreeing! Hooray!
