Poster of #8 here. I was 'outed' on page 1, so I'm not bothering to reply anonymously. And God, I am glad I'm not alone.

This may be a personal thing, but I feel that Ken's childhood was pretty rotten, all things considered, and I feel it's almost more affecting for being, at least up until Kase got involved, messed up in an utterly ordinary way. His issues are small-scale, entirely domestic, affect nobody but himself and - again, this is his early childhod I'm talking about, not the Kase stuff - they aren't actually anybody's fault. Things like that just happen sometimes and there's nobody to blame and nothing anybody can do about it. It just happens.

I really hate it when people give Ken a Mary-Sue-Riffic abusive past. It's pretty obvious from the Drama CDs that his family cared for him. He wouldn't have the issues he does if he'd been abused.

If fangirls just thought about it they'd realize how goddamn awful what Kase did to him was. Nobody gets that good at any sport without effectively devoting their life to it. His life was utterly destroyed by someone he thought he could trust. That, to me, is worse than what happened to Aya. At least Aya knows who to blame for what happened to his family and never believed him to be anything other but Evil with a capital EVIL. Ken trusted Kase. His past is easily as messed up as Aya's if not more so - but because he's not emotastically wallowing in misery he's somehow got it easy? Excuse me, fandom, but WHAT.

Yes, yes! And I never see anyone really take into account the future of them all. I mean, you can tell in Weiss Side B even more. Ken can't really DO anything should Weiss split up. Ran CAN go back to his sister, Youji can (and does) start new, Omi has his whole life ahead of him to pursue what he wants since he's so young, but Ken! Ken had his life set up, a life which he was passionate about, and then it was pulled away from him. He's believed to be dead, so he can't really jump back into a normal life, let alone pursue soccer again.

... actually, I once wrote a fic set just before the timejump in Kapitel which mentioned Ken's utter inability to find anything to do with his life that didn't have something to do with killing people, if I'm allowed to mention that. Before I wrote that, though, I didn't even think about it; I only realized it because I wrote the fic. You're totally correct: there's absolutely nothing else Ken can do with his life. Aya chooses to stay away from his sister - he didn't have to, but whatever his solid-gold reasons for it, he chose to go back. Omi manages to get away. Likewise Youji, even if it took total retrograde amnesia to manage it - he's still out. Ken? Ken is not only legally dead, life has equipped him for playing soccer (and he can't do that) or killing people. Basically, he's stuck.

I don't think his following Aya had that much to do with any burning desire for Aya's company over the rest of his team - by that point, Aya is absolutely all he had left. Omi's following in his family's footsteps by becoming a corporate bastard and Youji might as well be dead. Given that Ken has abandonment issues like whoa, I think he'd have followed anybody - and what else was he supposed to do? He couldn't exactly stay in prison for the rest of his natural life.

I need to go searching for some more Ken fan fictions again just to read up on his character some more. It's been SO LONG, but I still say he's one of my favorite characters of all time. He always stood out to me, so I really wondered why people downgraded him so much. I was never an Omi fan. Aya's alright, Youji's cooler, but Ken was always my favorite.

I never got to read Weiss Side B, but I did read a lot of the drama CD translations. I should go back and read them again. About all I know of Ken in Side B is that he likes to cook and wears a really awesome mask. Anything else big?
