(Anonymous) 2007-06-18 04:56 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, it would be nice if we could just keep all the bad parents from having kids. But it's not really realistic.
How would you determine who's not fit to breed? Not everyone is as self-aware or as honest as you, so going by people's self-assessments wouldn't work. Going by people's behavior before having kids wouldn't work, either - some people are really irresponsible and get their asses in gear after their kids are born. And some nice, responsible people in every other respect are actually very bad parents.
Some people who would be bad parents in their youth really shape up as they get older. You can't always tell whether or not someone would be a good parent till they are one. Sometimes you can, but not always.
And how would you enforce these restrictions, anyway? I can't really see any feasible way to do that.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting kids the fuck away like the moron in 19. But I don't know if "breeding restrictions" is really a viable way to do that.

Apologies for being a jerk. I was going to explain myself but I stopped and wondered if you were a troll (pretty much every anonymous person I've made the mistake of talking to was a troll).

(Anonymous) 2007-06-18 07:05 am (UTC)(link)You go by the same rules as you do for adoption. If it takes 25.000$, a specific sized house, extensive psyc. evaluation, health evaluation, parenting classes and getting your life turned up side down simply to adopt a child who is already born and waiting (all done to make absolutely sure that the child will be in good hands) - why should the rules be any less strict to ensure the welfare of an unborn one?
