Seriously, what is this misconception that ugly or overweight people will never get married/laid/whatever?

Statistically, people seek out mates who are similar to themselves, so each social group, disadvantaged or not, is self-perpetuating to a certain degree. However, there are always people who get left behind, and, as is the case for most things in our culture, it's the failure cases that get the attention.
