It was one of those "so hidden it's almost impossible to find" things. You need to talk to certain NPCs to piece together info about Raine and Laguna's son. But it's pretty much confirmed by Kiros in the Ragnarok that Laguna is Squall's father.

Laguna freaks out and tells Kiros to shut up. So it's implied that Laguna knows exactly who Squall is to him.

Didn't try to tell him? That's what Laguna keeps trying to say to him in...golly it's been years since I played, but I think it was on the spaceship.

Hmm I kinda agree with you OP. But these games are called Final "Fantasy" for a reason. The lovestory between Rinoa and Squall was more important than Lagunas and Squalls relationship (unlike in FFX), so not much attention was payed to it.

I feel stupid. I played this game when I was 12 and not once did I ever see anything about that.

Is it really subtle or something? I swear that's not something I would have missed...
