I don't blame you

Well that's...silly of you

The theater I was in had plenty of women. Bitches love Captain America

I’m sorry that you felt that way, but I think that’s bullshit. You remind me of my brother, who complained the Thor movie was “too girly” because Thor was played by an actor that my mom and I found attractive. Why is it so wrong for superhero movies to appeal to both genders? Why can’t women be fans of them?

My best friend and I (both female!) spent a long time looking forward to Captain America. And when I went to see it, there was a family with two pre-teen girls in the audience. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much else of the audience, but I think there was a pretty even ratio of male to female. So I fail to see how it “obviously” wasn’t meant for women to watch.

Also, I’m super excited for the Avengers, and while it’s unfortunate that most of the team is male, I’m still gonna watch the hell out of it.

Considering all the gratuitous abs-and-pecs-and-crotch shots, I'm not really sure how you came to that conclusion.

You're probably gonna get a billion comments saying this same thing, but: where were you? I was in NYC during the same weekend and the audience skewed, if not 50/50, than at least 65/35, with a lot of actual boys (ten and under) skewing it male.

Since when aren't comic book movies for girls, though. I know a LOT of ladies who saw Thor primarily for Papa Kirk's chest and were pleasantly surprised to enjoy the rest of the movie. I think audience data said that one was pretty close to 50/50, too.

So, I think this is an anomaly in your case, but it IS sad truth for us ladies that we DO end up loving media not designed with us in mind while men shy away from the opposite, so everything ends up defaulting to male-oriented. :/

There is no reason to feel ashamed just because you're a member of the minority in the audience. I mean, I've been to midnight game releases and such where I'm the only female there. It's all good. And nowhere does it say it isn't "meant" for you just because there are generally more guys that enjoy that sort of thing.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with every word and sentiment you have expressed here.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
You know, 8 is not that bad. I've been the only girl in a theater before - granted, not a full theater, but still. I often even go see movies by myself, and end up with a bunch of lonely guys in a cinema while watching cult films or something.

If you enjoy superheroes, or Marvel, then really it obviously is meant for you.

Chris Evans. That is all.

wait I take it back, that was kind of mean

I like how your brother thought Thor was girly because the lead was very masculine.

It can get tiring when mainstream superhero fare is aggressively marketed towards men, when obviously women also enjoy things like power fantasies, fistfights & explosions.

What I'm wondering, though, is did the movie appeal to you? If it did, then forget the audience ratio. Sometimes those things are a fluke. I was once the only girl in a high school class of about 30. The fact that it was a programming class had a bit to do with it, but a lot of it was also pure chance. If I'd taken it a semester earlier or a semester later, I wouldn't have been alone.

P.S. There are a lot of women in Captain America fandom.

Even if there weren't enough attractive men in the film to be aimed at you, this sorta falls flat. If you feeel you're not the target audience then claim the movie as your own. Genderbent it, Racebend and slash the hell out of it. This movie had other fangirls screaming about it and you have the same ability. use it!

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's because most of the women who wanted to see the movie were smart enough not to crowd into a theatre full of pungent fanboys. XD

Seriously though, ever since I saw a Spiderman movie on opening day, I refuse to step near a theatre the first day of anything. So crowded! So loud!

I went in a group with two other females and one guy. Mom, brother, and brother's girlfriend. Mom's not even a nerd and she loved the film. :)

I totally agree with you. Ginny felt more like a non-entity with me, not a character I like or dislike, just being there, and I like the way that Snape is written, but I find him a horrible person.

You're not alone, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
for fucks sake when did the movies become an all boys club

like what you like, don't feel ashamed because hollywood is a bunch of dickbags

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
...this comment is kind of adorable.
