Well that's...silly of you

The theater I was in had plenty of women. Bitches love Captain America

[identity profile] whitepawn-alice.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I’m sorry that you felt that way, but I think that’s bullshit. You remind me of my brother, who complained the Thor movie was “too girly” because Thor was played by an actor that my mom and I found attractive. Why is it so wrong for superhero movies to appeal to both genders? Why can’t women be fans of them?

My best friend and I (both female!) spent a long time looking forward to Captain America. And when I went to see it, there was a family with two pre-teen girls in the audience. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much else of the audience, but I think there was a pretty even ratio of male to female. So I fail to see how it “obviously” wasn’t meant for women to watch.

Also, I’m super excited for the Avengers, and while it’s unfortunate that most of the team is male, I’m still gonna watch the hell out of it.

Considering all the gratuitous abs-and-pecs-and-crotch shots, I'm not really sure how you came to that conclusion.

You're probably gonna get a billion comments saying this same thing, but: where were you? I was in NYC during the same weekend and the audience skewed, if not 50/50, than at least 65/35, with a lot of actual boys (ten and under) skewing it male.

Since when aren't comic book movies for girls, though. I know a LOT of ladies who saw Thor primarily for Papa Kirk's chest and were pleasantly surprised to enjoy the rest of the movie. I think audience data said that one was pretty close to 50/50, too.

So, I think this is an anomaly in your case, but it IS sad truth for us ladies that we DO end up loving media not designed with us in mind while men shy away from the opposite, so everything ends up defaulting to male-oriented. :/

There is no reason to feel ashamed just because you're a member of the minority in the audience. I mean, I've been to midnight game releases and such where I'm the only female there. It's all good. And nowhere does it say it isn't "meant" for you just because there are generally more guys that enjoy that sort of thing.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
You know, 8 is not that bad. I've been the only girl in a theater before - granted, not a full theater, but still. I often even go see movies by myself, and end up with a bunch of lonely guys in a cinema while watching cult films or something.

If you enjoy superheroes, or Marvel, then really it obviously is meant for you.

It can get tiring when mainstream superhero fare is aggressively marketed towards men, when obviously women also enjoy things like power fantasies, fistfights & explosions.

What I'm wondering, though, is did the movie appeal to you? If it did, then forget the audience ratio. Sometimes those things are a fluke. I was once the only girl in a high school class of about 30. The fact that it was a programming class had a bit to do with it, but a lot of it was also pure chance. If I'd taken it a semester earlier or a semester later, I wouldn't have been alone.

P.S. There are a lot of women in Captain America fandom.

Even if there weren't enough attractive men in the film to be aimed at you, this sorta falls flat. If you feeel you're not the target audience then claim the movie as your own. Genderbent it, Racebend and slash the hell out of it. This movie had other fangirls screaming about it and you have the same ability. use it!

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's because most of the women who wanted to see the movie were smart enough not to crowd into a theatre full of pungent fanboys. XD

Seriously though, ever since I saw a Spiderman movie on opening day, I refuse to step near a theatre the first day of anything. So crowded! So loud!

I went in a group with two other females and one guy. Mom, brother, and brother's girlfriend. Mom's not even a nerd and she loved the film. :)

for fucks sake when did the movies become an all boys club

like what you like, don't feel ashamed because hollywood is a bunch of dickbags

This shit is getting old

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
You've probably gotten a butt-ton of responses by now (gdi lj), but... really? The nearly sold-out showing I went to was about 70/30 skewing toward middle-age and older women. In Ohio.

There is no way in hell that movie was not "meant" for women. If anything, it was "meant" for comic book fans.

So if you're not a comic book fan, then no. It was not "meant" for you.

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoy The Expendables 2 then. If it's anything like the audience I was in for the first one, you'll have the exact opposite "issue."

Not that I'm complaining. It was kind of fun to see the two guys "drug" there by their wives/girlfriends/sisters/whomever the woman they were with was to them.

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Like what you like. Nobody's going to judge you unless you say things like "I'm a GIRL! That's right, I'm a GIRL and I LIKE SUPERHEROES! Which is weird because I'm a GIRL!"

Oh good grief. The audience of one movie showing does not represent the gender ratio of viewers--or, for that matter, the audience demographics in general. I went to see I Am Number 4 with a friend a couple days after it came out. Wanna know the audience makeup for that movie showing? It was just us. Nobody else went to that showing. We didn't have a meltdown because it was "obviously not meant for" men/women/any audience at all, or feel ashamed that (according the audience--or lack thereof) we had apparently picked such an awful movie that the theater was empty save for us. That would be pretty ridiculous.

If the audience makeup bothers you to the point of being unable to enjoy a movie, maybe you should consider waiting 'til it comes out on DVD.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Who the hell cares what was 'meant for you' or not? I hope you weren't actually ashamed. If you're a fan or were looking forward to it, then yes, it's meant for you. No matter what the audience was made up of.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you're a troll.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
What! Not meant for ladies?! Did you SEE Chris Evan's chest?! I don't think any of the dudes in my theater appreciated his glistening, sweaty chest and all of the arm porn.

Even so, when I went I was definitely not the only chick there, much like other commenters.

when I went to that movie, the moment he came out of the biggifier deal and was all muscular, all the women in the audience applauded, some catcalled. jus' sayin'.

[identity profile] teacuprabbit.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I thought this movie was very female-friendly! Hayley Atwell was AWESOME in it!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda know that feel OP. A group of me and about 8 other girls went to see it opening night, and we were the only girls not there with boyfriends or a large group of guys, it was just us. And yeah it felt kinda weird once I noticed that, but once everyone was seated and getting pumped for the movie to start, I really didnt care. Especially after the credits, when everyone was flipping out in the theater, that was so awesome having the entire theather just holler in excitement.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Um, what the fuck. Where do you live?! My theatre was PACKED with guys & gals alike. More to the point, however, you have no reason to be ashamed; you have every right to like what you want, and that movie wasn't "meant for" one gender or another, or one...anything or another. Shit, man, comic books are for everyone!

I don't know. Just the trailer was filled with fanservice for those of us who like cute beefy men - and for most of Hollywood that means "women".
