I’m sorry that you felt that way, but I think that’s bullshit. You remind me of my brother, who complained the Thor movie was “too girly” because Thor was played by an actor that my mom and I found attractive. Why is it so wrong for superhero movies to appeal to both genders? Why can’t women be fans of them?

My best friend and I (both female!) spent a long time looking forward to Captain America. And when I went to see it, there was a family with two pre-teen girls in the audience. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much else of the audience, but I think there was a pretty even ratio of male to female. So I fail to see how it “obviously” wasn’t meant for women to watch.

Also, I’m super excited for the Avengers, and while it’s unfortunate that most of the team is male, I’m still gonna watch the hell out of it.

I like how your brother thought Thor was girly because the lead was very masculine.

I... don't really get this.

[identity profile] caffeinefreeddp.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I had to drag my husband with me to watch Captain America (and Thor. And Iron Man. Etc...) because I'm a huge nerd and him...not so much. I don't really think the movies are overtly geared to men or women, though honestly with the Chaste Hero and the Stern Love Interest, I thought Captain America was pretty, well...lady friendly. Plus, you know, Chris Evans flashed the only skin in the whole movie.

I actually adored how filled with fanservice-for-women Thor was, and the only part of Natalie Portman the camera ogled was her face. It was a nice change from the cheesecake and boobies I'm used to in comic-related stuff.

THIS. I loved that Natalie Portman wasn't really objectified, and neither was Lady Sif (who was pretty well-characterized as far as action girls go).

Pepper Potts in the original Iron Man wasn't objectified at all either. Even when she wore a dress it was pretty conservative by Hollywood standards.

Let's not talk about Black Widow.

Very, very true. Yet another reason to love Pepper Potts. She got a bit shrieky and helpless during Iron Man 2, but she also had quite a few scenes where she was pretty capable and competent, so I guess it all balances out.

Yeah, Black Widow was pure fanboy fantasy, but I think I'd rather take that than a shrieking damsel in distress, like Mary Jane in the Spider-Man movies.

[identity profile] nani1986.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, everyone had moments of OOCness during Iron Man 2. I think the only person who who didn't get on my nerves during that movie was Coulson.

I've been very pleased with women in Marvel films thus far. The romantic interests/warrior girls are all interesting and three-dimensional.

I agree. Hopefully she'll be fleshed out during The Avengers. The potential is there.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they did, but that's probably because they tried to pack nearly two films' worth of story into one film. But I liked it anyway.

I totally agree with this. They're pretty fleshed out and interesting compared to females in the majority of action movies, superhero or not. I wish DC would follow suit. And I really need to get a Sif or Jane or Darcy icon.

Apparently, she was supposed to have more scenes in IM2, but they got cut in order to preserve the Tony/Pepper relationship, which audiences liked. I figured she was so aloof because she was secretly observing Tony.

[identity profile] nani1986.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I also think that they used IM2 to promote TA and neglected the character development of Pepper/Tony/Rhodey to further that storyline. Besides, it was too many new characters.

(I liked it too, but the first one was waaaaay better)

I know and I'm glad they didn't go down that route. Johansson and Downey were so awkward and had no chemistry on the make-up scene before Tony's birthday party. And after that, they seemed to have a bickering siblings thing going on. So I'm cool with her being kept as a kick-ass SHIELD agent who is not Tony's love interest.
