One big point against the reboot that I see is that in a handful of years, the writers are going to begin instituting the same eventual stories of the characters from before, either because the new writer wants to put their spin on the old idea or because a new writer who grew up with a character in a certain style will take the reins and decide to bring back 'their' version of the character.

While the continuity reboot may draw in new readers who were previously daunted with the massive amount of background material, the comics are already written with a mind of 'every issue is someone's first.' Now, granted, you can't drop someone into the final issue of a story arc and expect them to get everything that's going on, but, especially in the era of online archives or Wiki sites, there's always a way to catch up. Fans like the continuity nods and references and new people are interested in finding out what the offhand reference to 'ancient and mystic artifact of untold power #47' means.

Basically, it's trying to wipe the slate clean without realizing that what came before always leaves an afterimage that affects what is put on it afterwards.

Ridiculous costumes and some weird character shuffling aside, I'm excited because I can finally start from the beginning again with the heroes that I like, and not have to worry about the 126362719 continuities that happen at the same time to get the whole story, BUT I don't understand why things like Batman Beyond are getting rebooted. It JUST started!!

If you're a comic book newbie, then the reboot is pretty much for you. I highly recommend reading them.

Here's why it's a bad thing for me: I've been reading about these characters for years. I LIKE their current backstories. I LIKE the relationships they've built up over time. I've spent more time than I even want to think about keep track of what they've been doing, how their characters have developed, what huge events have impacted them as people. And damnit I like the way they look NOW. It's not simply about things changing, it's that everything I've put so much time and money into following is simply being replaced. Hopefully they'll still act the same, but that won't change the stories that are being undone and the development that is being forgotten.

So there you go. I have no problem with people looking forward to the reboot. I imagine many of them will be very good. It's also a perfect point for new people to jump in. But as someone who's not new and has been following these guys for a while, thinking about the reboot just makes me really sad.

At first hearing about the reboot, I was really excited seeing as I pretty much stick to just Gotham based comics. I'm ready to branch out but after seeing the treatment that two of my favorite characters are getting (Harley Quinn & Stephanie Brown) in one case completely mutilated and the other cast aside and ignored I'm rethinking my position. Well, at least they haven't fucked with Catwoman... oh wait! The ptb at DC think that Catwoman would in the middle of heist get away swinging from building to building think its the perfect time to flash her bra!

I was so happy when I found out that Harley was getting another comic but after seeing that HORRIFIC rage inducing cover...to be honest if I hadn't read the title of the tumblr entry I would have never recognized her. The one character that got me actually buying comics as an adult was Stephanie Brown. I was surprised when I discovered that Gotham had a female Robin and that later they had brought her back as Batgirl. I'm in the middle of her run (lack of funds for goodies) and after keeping my eyes peeled about her fate in the reboot she's being ignored as both Batgirl and her stint as Robin. So yeah I'm very skeptical of the reboot for my favorites. Who knows I might find a range of new favorites? Now I do look forward to starting Blue Beetle since that sounds interesting. As for my bedrock faves NO FUCKING THANK YOU DC.

They say that they are doing this so new readers can get into comics, so I guess that when things get confusing again and they decide to reboot everything in 5 years, you'll understand why people are pissed.

Side-eying everything else with mild trepidation because oh gosh some of those costume redesigns are ridiculously silly-looking and why is Babs walking again and how much of the continuity I like is not in the new continuity and do my favorite Titans even exist in this continuity I AM SO WORRIED OH GOSH.

I'm apparently the only established fangirl in the world who isn't having fainting spells and clutching my pearls over the relaunch, but I don't much care, I think it looks cool. There's lots of stuff I don't like about the new stories and characters (yep, Steph, Harley, all that looks crappy), but you know what? There was stuff in the old continuity that sucked too, amazingly enough. People always seem to immediately forget about the stuff they've been spending the last year or so complaining about and wallow in happy nostalgia for the good old days (which they hated at the time).

There'll be fun stuff, nonny. Come play!
