Oh boy, here we go... *incoming soapbox rant*

Alright, so it makes me a bit of an angry gay activist to say this, but my issue is not Kurt himself but the (admittedly growing but still sparse) portrayal of gay teens in the media period. If they aren't blindingly obvious, they are few and far between and still written as 'the gay character,' only getting stories that relate to their sexuality and associated struggles rather than ones that revolve around their personality and interests. And the reason I'm on Kurt's case for being as flaming as he is is due to Glee's popularity catapulting him into the spotlight as a representation of gay teens in the media. I know that wasn't part of the intentions of the writers when they created the character, but since it's happened, it's happened, and the implications are there.

Being a teenager is difficult enough when you're straight. When you're gay, you have to look a lot harder for role models to learn from. In this regard, Kurt sends the message that 'if you're gay, you've got to basically be a girl with a penis.' And that's not hyperbole, he's actually said he considers himself an honorary girl. And THAT'S where I find that he fails so hard, that Kurt is written as a girl with a penis. I am not like that. Many of my gay friends are not like that. But if a character like Kurt were on mainstream TV during my teen years, sending out that message, it would have driven me further into the closet, because I am not and could not be like that. And that's why I criticize Kurt so much.

There are segments of the gay community who come after the so-called 'straight gay' for the fact that they don't 'act' gay. I don't act gay and I don't act straight. I act like me. 'Me' just aligns more with the image of a straight guy than a gay guy. Does that mean that I have to go and turn in my rainbow somewhere and start making out with cheerleaders? If it does, I'm in serious trouble.

If there were a greater variety of teen gay characters on TV, I would back off on Kurt. But there isn't, and I'm not going to start gnawing on any old bone that gets thrown my way just because it's representation at all.

*gives internet*

Amen, brother.
Watching those kinds of characters on television makes me sad. I'm a boyish girl, but apparently, it's completely impossible for a tomboy to be anything else than a raging bulldyke. Finn makes me sad, because he's just reinforcing the whole "Your sexuality has nothing to do with who you like. It's your personality that determines that!"

This is superlate but I had to comment and say you are a hero for saying this. This is one of the main reasons I dislike Kurt as a character. I really dislike the whole notion that if you are gay you must act a certain way. The only thing your sexuality affects is who you are attracted to. End of story.
