The way I see this is, since it's an internet debate, responses aren't instantaneous like they often are in real life. When I find myself in an online debate, I stress more over it than I do over real life debates partly due to the fact that I think about what I said until I get a response. If it takes too long, I wonder if I've insulted people, or if I've won the debate and they have no counter-arguments, or if they just don't care to keep checking back. In real life, even if someone does completely stop responding, I can often gauge the reason they've given up on the debate by their expression or their tone.
tl;dr: I think there's too many unknowns on the internet to make for comfortable debates for some people.
