Yeah, and burning more calories than you consume is also not eating enough calories to support your daily activities. That's what that is. It's why your body goes to its fat reserves. But your body wants its fat reserves maintained, and so it goes into OMFG STARVATION mode and lowers its metabolism to start trying to combat the new sudden change in diet.

So then you have to lower your calories more.

And then your body responds again.

And eventually, even though you've still got fifteen more pounds to go, your body just won't budge any further. And you are exhausted, and your body is exhausted, and you keep on trying, but your health is failing, and maybe even you manage those last fifteen pounds. Maybe.

And you can't just keep not taking in enough calories to live, because that will kill you. Even if only very slowly, it will still kill you. It's called starving to death. If you need 2000 cals a day and you are taking in 1800 eventually that catches up with you. So you go back to taking in only the exact number of calories you need, and it's still the right amount, but your body is still in OMG STARVATION mode, so it takes more than it should ( more than it did before) to store as fat. It will do this the instant you raise your calorie intake back up even a little. Even from 1200 to 1300, your body will go "MORE CALORIES THAN WE'VE HAD RECENTLY! DIVE DIVE DIVE!" and will keep you from energy you need in order to save for a rainy day it thinks is inevitable.

And you gain back the weight. Plus some.

You couldn't have kept not eating, because your body NEEDS energy. Eventually it will die if you aren't taking in enough. And it's detrimental to your health to maintain that sort of diet for very long. But by going on the diet in the first place, you've fucked up your metabolism, and the weight loss didn't stick.

This is how it works. For the majority of people.

Sigh. Burning fat =/= starvation. There is a healthy way to lose weight, and that is SLOWLY. If you're losing more than 2-ish lbs per week (depending on your weight), then you're probably doing it the unhealthy starvation omg-my-body-is-freaking-out way. If you do it slowly, you will not be subjected to the nightmarish scenario you've described above. Calm down. I have done this. I know many people who have done this. There's a difference between eating a healthy number of calories and still cutting down your intake, and just starving yourself.

I agree losing weight slowly is best if you're going to try.

But losing weight slowly is starving. Slowly.

Taking in fewer calories than you need IS, by definition, STARVING. Eventually, no matter how slowly you do it, it would, if continued forever, kill you.

Your fat is burning because you aren't eating enough food to maintain yourself. Not having enough food to maintain yourself is starving.

Which doesn't mean there aren't good reasons to do such a thing (bodies are complicated, as is health, and people can make their own choices), but that's what it is, no matter how you try to guild it.

And it almost never works in the long run if your goal was permanent weight loss. And if your body is in a place where its going to its fat reserves, then yes, no matter how gently you are doing it, your body is panicking, and it can't tell that you chose to do this. And it perceives the situation as one of starvation, and it will respond accordingly.

Wow. She just said cutting down your intake but still eating a healthy amount (read: eating what you need). Are you just that fucking stupid or being deliberately obtuse? And you wonder why even those of us who are overweight think you're full of it.

[identity profile] timemachineyeah.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're taking in fewer calories than you are using, your body can't tell you are eating what you need. It will perceive the situation as a starvation one. It can't tell the difference between choosing to eat less and not being able to eat more because of circumstance. It evolved to survive the latter.

It's really not that complicated.

And you keep insisting that's a bad thing for some reason, and will cause you horrible suffering. Probably because you're the size of a beached whale, I'd guess. As long as you eat a healthy amount (and composition) of calories, a little temporary "starvation" to drop some weight is not going to hurt you. It'll certainly help you more than that extra bag of pork rinds will.

"Which doesn't mean there aren't good reasons to do such a thing (bodies are complicated, as is health, and people can make their own choices)"

Your reading comprehension is abysmal.

And we've gotten to the ad hominem section of the thread! Congratulations everyone.

And I'm not the size of a beached whale (real original there, roger) but I also don't consider that be a worthwhile insult, because I don't think there's a size at which people suddenly lose their right to be respected as a human being. Fancy that.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-29 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why couch it in such cautionary, defeatist language, hmm? If there are "good reasons" to do it, then why are you actively discouraging people from doing so?

I think the size at which your ego could rightly consume a small republic is the point at which you are no longer worthy of being respected as a human being. You passed that point long ago. Have a nice day!
