#29. I totally agree. Give me the emotional stuff. I do read twincest fic but the somehow always end up skipping the porny parts. I wanna see the fall out from it or see how they deal with it, because how can that not be just a giant mess? What if their family finds out? What if their friends find out? How can that possibly end well? Ah, the drama, the angst. I love it.

The quote from Oliver about filming Fred's death that's going around on Tumblr is fake though (the one that says he burst into tears when he saw James on on the stretcher). So is the one from Dan about how the twins said 'I love you' to each other after the scene. James fell asleep while they were shooting that scene and that the cast and crew all went to lunch after they finished the scene and James woke up on an empty set.

That Link and Zelda in particular have a strange relationship—it's not exactly a warm and fuzzy relationship, is it? So it's natural to like Anju and Kafei, who honestly love each other against all odds, as a couple better. And every Link and Zelda pair have different dynamics.

lmao, that's awesome. I like that a lot better than the other explanations

Whoa. This Winnie the Pooh thing is a brand new theory to me, and I'm not sure I'm buyin'. Sure, the characters are all very extreme in one way or another, but it's all Christopher Robin's exaggerated imagination, considering he's a child as well as the entire work being meant for an audience of children. Still, very interesting.

yesssssss. it's the 25th anniversary series of macross and admittedly i may be biased bc i adore sheryl beyond words but yes it is great. i would definitely recommend it to you. basically, humanity has spread out throughout the galaxy on giant world-ships, looking for new planets to colonize. this series takes place on one of those ships, and it revolves around sheryl nome, the girl in the secret, a intergalactic super star, alto, a pilot for a private mercenary group, and ranka, a schoolgirl who wants to be a singer, and how their lives intersect as the ship comes under threat.

if you're not into music (there is a lot of it in the series) and the power of song, it might not be for you, but it is definitely epic and a great story. plus sheryl is one of the greatest female anime characters of the past decade, so. there's a 25 episode series, and two movies, the latter of which has not been subbed yet.

Aw, see, I'm mostly the opposite, I thought his Japanese voice was adorable BECAUSE it was so unusual (but yeah, absolutely NOT FOR SINGING good god I'm sorry Junpei, you may be my favorite character but I can't listen to that thing all the way through!)

I don't. Secrets are fun, but there's always more of them. The comments pretty much dry up the moment the new bunch of secrets gets put out.

With OP on this, myself. I honestly NEVER much cared for Link and Zelda together. It just seemed off to me. I felt like they had less chemistry than Mario and Peach... :x But Anju and Kefei, they made me happy. I just wanted to give them big giant hugs. And one day, I will get them together, I swear! Once I get over my fear of the moon!

I always read both Tonks and Lupin as gay, and the fact that tended up together was kind of a slap in the face.

Same.

Them ending up together seemed so... out of nowhere and OOC (if I can say that about canon) to me.

I am exaggerating for effect but not as much as you might think.

I think 37s' OP is saying that b/c visually that scene is almost a perfect lift from an X Files episode.

Re: 1

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it sounds harsh but from what I've read it's been reclaimed (not to mention that it's a pun so I think it's a bit more tongue-in-cheek than mean-spirited). In my anecdotal experience, I typically see people self identify as yaoi fangirls and see non-yaoi-fangirls call them fujoshi, but this probably has to do with the fact that I rarely see the word "fujoshi" on livejournal or tumblr and see it all the time on /a/.

Re: 39

Oh, yeah, I totally agree with you. That's why I stuck a YMMV on the end of "others' OC fantasies are typically not [entertaining to us]." I've read fics with OC main characters and OC love interests that are interesting and very readable, even after I developed more discriminating tastes. Even ones that seem to be some measure of wish fulfillment for the author. And some of my old wish-fulfillment fic that makes me cringe now (written at 12-13 years old) had fans, mostly other young girls my age.
I just consider the good ones to be the exception rather than the rule, and I find that more people dislike OCs (particularly wish-fulfillment OCs) than like them. And regardless of the actual figures, OCs and particularly Mary Sues have become SUCH a taboo that the anti-OC viewpoint is politically stronger in fandom.

OH MY GOD A GENSHIKEN SECRET TEARS ARE RUNNING DOWN MY FACE RIGHT NOW

This is my favorite manga of all time (OF ALL TIME) and I never, EVER meet anyone who has even heard of it, oh my god. Seeing Ogiue again made me smile so much.

Don't worry OP, I've been in your boat. Just be yourself. You don't have to admit you're a fujoshi - that's part of you. If someone finds out and then teases you about it maliciously, screw 'em - but if they're a real friend they're not gonna do that (unless they're a bible thumper or something I guess). What you do in your spare time isn't anyone else's business!

They have a low-level (sexual) tension certainly, but I thought that scene was even better at showing the non-sexual tension. Jack has literally no one else in the world besides Gwen, but the relationship is unbalanced because Gwen has a family she loves and puts first. It was a pretty literal way to show it, but still effective.

I haven't finished it yet, but I think that's part of the point, given that the game is about a shiftless, immature early-30-something man with a pathological fear of commitment/adulthood.

Re: 39

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-07-29 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are rules of thumb like that which work in most cases, although it always varies from story to story. One of the best Final Fantasy VII OC fanfics I ever read completely rewrote the events of the game and had one of the most frequently terrible pairings (Sephiroth/female OC) which was executed shockingly well. Another fanfic that I'm currently following sidesteps the issue by taking place far in the future since the canon series included immortal characters who are still alive in the OCs' time.
Typically I don't like reading OC stories and these stories work best for me as changes of pace, not day-to-day typical reading. So because of that it's hard to pin down what are good rules for OC fic, because to me it's all about what hits me just right when I go to read it.
