I've heard 2 arguments in this regard. One is that there's a valid semantic difference; the terms have different connotations. "Non-con" implies that a story is purely for pornographic value, while "rape" implies that a story will actually address the horror and trauma surrounding the act. (Or maybe it's the reverse. I've never actually heard them formally defined, only subjectively. People tend to concoct these personal definitions for terms and then fight to the death over them.) The other argument is that the word "rape" itself can be triggery for people, and the term non-con makes coming across such labels safer for them. Then again, AO3 labels it as "rape/non-con", so idefk about that.

Dunno how I feel about either argument, in part because they tend to be so wishy-washy and not very clearly defined. But I label and warn for rape by default, so meh.

Thing is, I kind of agree with both of these arguments, though if we're going to insist on using the word rape for what it is despite the fact that it can be triggery, you could argue at using a splat in the word (writing it as r*pe) to avoid it being a trigger.

Eh, personally? I do try to use the phrase "non-con" if it's written for smut value/rape fantasy/kink or whatever, and I use the word "rape" if it's meant to be taken as exactly that, nothing appealing or "hot" about it. Which, uh, I've written more of the latter, actually. :\ IDK. It makes sense to me to make the distinction.

Eh, well... I've pretty much only ever written rape in the context of trauma, so I suppose that's why I have never run up against the problem myself. :T I feel like the distinction could be useful if it was universally subscribed to, but that's nowhere near true.

The first argument is generally how I distinguish rape-fics and non-con fics.
