(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)It's a little difficult to talk about the difference without risking triggering people, but a scenario that would be "non-con" without being "rape" would be the old classic erotic-fiction trope of a stern headmaster who summons the meek female student into his office, applies corporal punishment for some trifling infraction and moves from there into forcing the student to sate his lusts. Now, is that "rape" in the conventional sense of the word? Certainly it is. But if you tagged such a story "rape" you'd get complaints that it should have been tagged "non-con" instead, that the headmaster simply using his authority and the implied threats he can bring to bear to force the student's compliance just doesn't hit the buttons that someone looking for "rape"-tagged stories is looking for. (And vice-versa, of course; a tale of one stranger forcing compliance of another through physical force is not "non-con," it's "rape.")
Frequently people would crusade into the group, furious that we "didn't understand" that "no means no" and whenever sex ensues despite one of the parties saying "no" it's rape. Each and every time we'd have to explain that that was the case in the real world but we were well aware we were writing fiction, and furthermore wanted to write fiction that hewed closest to the fantasies of the people we were writing for. It got pretty tiring, explaining it over and over again. =(
