F!S Anon Meme (the Fifth)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

(LJ's still lagging here and there, good luck.)

I am clearly the youngest person in my fandom. I'm only 17, and I'll be a senior in high school this fall.
All of my friends are so much older and have kids and such.
Part of me gets nervous they will find out and treat me differently, but part of me is happy I am getting this out now and I am not spending my time writing hardcore slash fic when I am 30 with kids.

You need to grow up.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I will in a few years.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And by that point you'll realize what an idiot you sound like when you judge someone else's hobbies.

Frankly, this isn't the best time for you to be getting fandom behavior "out of your system." Your friends who do this with their spare time in their 30s? Yeah, when they were your age, they were probably out having real life experiences. They were meeting friends who would stay with them the rest of their life, their husbands, maybe even having their kids. They already have their youthful lives, their relationships in order. And now that they have free time, they're using it for porn.

You are wasting away the best years of your life by using your free time to write something you'd be ashamed to show anyone face-to-face.

Do you think life just gets cooler as you get older? No. It plateaus at 25.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to blame it on the culture of technology soiling today's youth.

+1

lol mte.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe this is true, but I think that half of the people who write fanfic on here are like...14-18. So...........................yeah. Oh well.
Not OP, btw.

lol that someone's automatically "wasting" their years because they're involved in fandom. i was in excellent college classes, in a sorority and other campus groups, AND extremely involved in fandom. it's not necessarily one or the other.

(that said, idt it's so bad to still be involved when you're 30, especially if you have more free time.)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This...I was just going to say all of this, but you covered it, haha.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. I've volunteered steadily since I was 18, been active in campus groups (including a co-ed service fraternity), made the Dean's List four semesters in a row, and am currently working to finish up my major and three certificates. And in high school, I was in marching band, concert band, and jazz band, which is much more time-intensive than it may initially sound. Just because we're young and in fandom does not mean we've accomplished nothing.

To the other anon: your life only plateaus at 25 if you let it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, maybe it's just me, but I would rather someone "waste" their time in fandom than be out there having kids at 17.

Also, you can have real-life experiences and still be involved in fandom.

Best years of your life? Yeah right. When I was 17 I was painfully shy, closeted, stuck in hicksville with my overly-authoritarian parents. What the hell did I have to pass the time with until I got the hell out of there other than TV and porn?

Life doesn't end in your mid-twenties unless you give up and let it.

Quoted for truth ♥

MERYL STREEP IS A TESTAMENT TO THAT FACT.

But seriously, thank you.
Everyone comes from different backgrounds and can spend their youth as they please. If that happens to be writing fic instead of partying, then that's cool by me.

"Do you think life just gets cooler as you get older? No. It plateaus at 25."

Lol, no it doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lol mine definitely didn't. At 25 I was flat ass broke and always worried about some boyfriend or other. SO much happier to be 30.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...Hang on a minute, since when are teenage years "the best ones in your life"? From my experience, and from what I can tell as far as others are concerned, 17 is the WORST AGE EVER. It sucks, mightily.

I agree that OP has got it completely wrong and it's rather WTF, but I'd also say that your point of view isn't much better. Being condescending isn't going to help anyone grow up.

Went abroad for the first time at 27, went on my first date at 29, finally going to college in the fall; nope I can definitely say it doesn't. :-)

Unless your fandom is ten fen strong, you're probably not the youngest fan there. I was into X-Files when I was twelve and my sister was ten. My niece got into fandom when she was thirteen and now she's eighteen. So unless your fandom is something really off the wall, you're probably not the youngest.
