Or if you still want video games, might I suggest a the more frugal option of signing up for Gamefly? It's a small fee every month, like Netflix, and they send you games to play, and you return them whenever you want in exchange for more games.

If I put it in a savings account I won't get any money at all next year because I will be significantly over the limit. I literally have to spend most of it, and I'm only in need of so many clothes and mobility aids.

I'm planning on a Gamefly subscription, but I'm still going to buy things - because A: Gamefly doesn't do PC games, and B: I'd really like a console that people still make games for, thanks. (And C: what, only rich people can own games they like?)

If you're on SSI, you're not /allowed/ to have a savings account- or at least, not one that you have access to.

It counts as assets, and you can't receive support if you have more than a certain amount in assets even if you're depending on the support to pay for things like rent and food. If you have too much left over at the end of one month, you're more or less obligated to spend down so that you don't lose support and wind up not having any funds during months when you /do/ really need them.

And yes, OP stands a fairly good chance of "always being fucking poor" because the system as it stands IS A FUCKING POVERTY TRAP.

It's SSI money, dipshit. By fucking law, you can't save it (not in the way you're talking about). You can't even donate it.

If you don't spend the entire stipend, your benefits will get reduced, and then you're shit out of luck when you actually need extra money (like in the summer when you have to run the A/C). So instead, you have to spend the remainder after necessary expenses are taken care of on "for fun" stuff to ensure you don't get screwed in a couple months.

Jesus fucking Christ, at least know what you're on about before you go berating someone.

I guess I'm supposed to spend it on gruel and ratty Goodwill clothes so that I don't use people's precious tax money to have - gasp! - fun. D:
