F!S Anon Meme (the Fifth)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

(LJ's still lagging here and there, good luck.)

You say "it's not my job to educate people" on your status?

If you want them to know or care what you're talking about, YES IT IS.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

Sure, no one should have to explain the common sense shit about why it's bad to be racist/homophobic, but if someone's a minority whatever, you'd think they'd rather give someone accurate information than send them off to fucking GOOGLE.

thiiiiiiiiiis D:

I have absolutely no problem educating people (given that they actually asked) because holy shit, there is a lot of phobic shit out there that just makes it worse. There's a wealth of info on the internet, sure, but without a guide, you don't know what's legit and what's not :( I'd be mortified if I told somebody to go Google it and they came back with even worse views than just straight-up ignorance.

Yeah, I'm not asking everyone to write a dissertation on their lives, but if they want people to know about whatever issue it is that's affecting them, they can at least give reliable sources where people can find the info instead of acting high and mighty every time someone makes an honest mistake. If they do the latter, nobody wins; when I've made honest mistakes and people have acted like asses about it, I've been sorely tempted to keep on doing exactly what I did that offended them in the first place just out of spite.

Thing is, it's never like you just have to educate one person and then it's okay. It's kind of constant, and sometimes you just can't be arsed to talk about it. Esp. on the internet when Google is right there. Doubly especially when you're just trying to have a conversation with people who already know about the subject, and somebody pops up demanding basic information and the whole thread ends up being about educating them again. 101-type stuff is useful, but sometimes you want to move beyond it.

I think it's helpful to educate people, I like to do it when I'm in the mood, but I don't think you should be obliged to.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody is obliged to do anything, but if you refuse to explain your reasoning to someone who clearly doesn't know what you mean, you lose the right to be surprised that they don't know what you mean.

The 'it's not my job to educate you' truth does not mean, as some people take it to mean, 'I shall not educate you'.

It means 'You are not entitled to my time just for being ignorant. You are not allowed to insist I educate you, and, if I don't have the time or don't want to, then proceed to continue being racist, claiming that since I didn't educate you, you know not to be'.

Education is a good thing, but no-one is entitled to it. And if you don't feel like you want to educate someone, you shouldn't have to. But if you do? Do!

I get this point, but I've never personally seen the phrase used in a way which translates as anything other than "I enjoy getting angry at strangers for imagined or accidental slights and making excuses about why I don't have to make a logical argument".

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's what the phrase originally meant, I think...unfortunately in recent years it's been turned into "I WANT TO SAY THAT YOU'RE WRONG AND NOT EXPLAIN WHY!!!!1" (Similarly, can anyone explain to me when "intent is not magical" became a goddamn thing?)
