I was all right with the concept of anyone paired with anyone (or no one paired with no one, if the author chose to go that way), but Harry got all this facetime with the reader and Hermione got all this facetime with the reader and the two characters got all this facetime with each other and then in the end Harry got together with a character with whom he, and the reader, had spent very little time. This is where the H/Hr in me comes from.

Saying that it works that way in real life, saying that friends work that way in real life, is not an argument that holds water with me. This is a book. This is fiction, and narrative structure leads to expectations that feel disappointing if not fulfilled.

I shipped H/Hr until it became clear to me what she was doing with Ron and Hermione, at which point my issue became a lot more about the inclusion of R/H than the lack of H/Hr. Different can of worms.
