My dad was also extremely surprised by it, and had wanted Harry/Hermione, too. This is kind of hilarious to me since he's a chemistry teacher and he rarely gets into any fiction at all, so him not only being engrossed in Harry Potter, but shipping something in it cracks me up.

That said, I disagree. Ron and Hermione had excellent chemistry and I don't think Harry and Hermione would've worked. I'm not a big Harry/Ginny fan myself, I vastly prefer him with Luna, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad relationship. It was poorly developed, but they could work out I think.

Bickering =/= chemistry. R/Hr don't have excellent chemistry, they have annoying bickering.

Uhm, no? It started off as just bickering and what was more or less incessant one-upmanship, but keep in mind, when they met? They were eleven years old. Kids that like each other tease each other like that sometimes, and as the books progressed you could see their relationship progressing to that weird sort of friendship that they had into something more. It changed over time, gradually and subtly like it should. It was beautiful IMO.

Gurl, yes. The whole bickering thing being brought up makes me think that some people just never got past book 4.

idk man, that isn't how I saw it at all. That's how you saw it, and that's completely fine, but I saw a romance potentially blossoming pretty early on myself.

Your opinion? Not everyone's. I always felt there was a dynamic between them and they were growing/learning how to handle it.
