Really? I don't even like The Lion King, and I think that's probably an overreaction. My understanding of the situation has always been that Disney (wrongly) assumed they were going to win the rights to remake Kimba, and so they forged ahead with the movie without permission and were so far along, that when they *didn't* get the rights, basically said 'fuck it, let's make this movie anyway.' Supremely douchey move, yes, and I would understand people defending Disney for screwing over the creator of the manga for a cut of the profits, but getting mad about how Disney stole ideas, like it was a regular creative issue seems misguided, imo. It was more of a literal (as in financial) ripping-off, really. (Not that it makes them right, of course.)

And f course, if I'm wrong about the situation, I guess it's a moot point, lol. Either way, OP needs to go ahead and take a chill pill.

I would feel much better about it and understand Disney more if they hadn't, once they found out they didn't have the rights for it, pretended they had no idea what Kimba was and did not even acknowledge that, yes, they based their idea off of it. Supreme doucheassery move for me.

Disney pretty much assumed that because they were a big enough of a company that if they ignore the issue and pretended it didn't exist, then it would simply go away. And it did because most of the Western world doesn't even know Kimba existed or gave a shit once they found out.

On the other hand, if the same situation happened in reverse and it was Disney who was plagiarized... well. You can imagine the shit storm that would occur both by the company and by the fans.

TL;DR, Disney made a dick move and the double standard makes me ill.

This. I did enjoythe lion king, but it bugs me that Disney pursues their own copyright vs fans SO aggressively when they also do shit like this. I wouldn't have such a problem if they didn't have a history of setting out to crush all competition so absolutely.

Yea, that's pretty much what happened.
