I'm pretty sure, at the height of its popularity, most of the fans had NOT seen the show, or at the very least had only seen a few episodes.

Well, it was in the dark ages of 1999 or so! I know didn't have access to fansubs, and was waiting, all a-twitter, for the English dub to come along on TV.
