Am I the only one who doesn't see the rip off? The stories are completely different, the characters are completely different, the animation style is completely different. Apart from a few select scenes and the names Kimba/Simba, there are practically no similarities between the two.

Nah, I'm with you. If you go through any two vaguely similar movies you're going to find a bunch of superficial similarities, particularly in a movie like this where the animals have definite personalities we associate with them. A wise monkey in both films isn't surprising at all. However, in a lot of cases, the species seems to be the only similarity in the character design - the shapes and attitudes are totally different!

The name if anything makes me question it more. If they were knowingly ripping off someone and they didn't want to be caught, why use such a similar name, when the name is probably the least important thing?

I can see why they picked the names. Simba means 'lion' in Swahili, Rafiki means 'friend' in Swahili' and the majority of 'Cirle of Life' is in Swahili.

Oh yeah, what I mean is that if they were trying to rip it off (had prior knowledge, but wanted to get away with it), they could have chosen a word like "prince" or "king" in Swahili for his name instead of "lion." It would still be in Swahili and all, but not one letter away from Kimba where it just invites comparison (which is really dumb if that's what they wanted to avoid people thinking it was a rip-off).

You're not the only one. It's a lot of nitpicking to me. Personally, the songs are what set The Lion King apart from other movies. If it didn't have them I know I would not have liked it as much as I do.

Also, Kimba originates from Australia and it means 'bushfire.' Simba is African and means 'lion.'
