That's a mouse monastery warrior!

I might have to read this!

They're awesome! Many of the great heroes are mice. That one is Matthias. My favorite of the series was Mossflower.

Oh, you need to.

If you're irked by absolutes (eg, certain animal species were just born bad, and can neither go against their wicked nature or be redeemed) then you might want to think twice.

Yeah, I know it's for kids. But I think it's fucked up that stoats and rats and the like are destined to be rotten and villainous. It's too *ideologically loaded* for me to just overlook.

I'm pretty sure we'd all starve to death on that diet. It sounds good, but it's not people food.

Candied chesnuts? Strawberry cordial? Vegetal pasties?
I'LL EAT YOURS! :P But WTF is a pastie anyway...?

Pasties are awesome! http://www.cornishpastyco.com/history/index.html

My problem is that I don't like nuts. But even I wanted to after reading about those feasts.

How have you not had a pasty before? How has the House of Merry Weirdoes managed such a grievous oversight in your culinary education? 8O

Pasties are delicious!

Find thee a nice Irish restaurant or pub (check their menu online because not all have pasties but I have yet to find anywhere but Irish that serves them, at least in the US). If you by any weird chance live either in the Seattle or Olympia areas, I can give recommendations. Or Boston, for that matter. They're usually served as appetizers in restaurants but I have *cough* made meals out of them before because THEY ARE SO DAMNED GOOD.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Could be worse. I maintain that the hares eat as much as they do in the books in order to try to absorb enough nutrients to avoid consuming certain things real lagomorphs do, if you get my drift. I know this isn't scientifically sound, but it amuses me.

[identity profile] ryahhime.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel! I have a lot of food sensitivities too (though from a chronic illness relating to my digestive system) and I often feel that way about fictional worlds/places. Every time there's a quest or something I think to myself, "If I were there, I couldn't eat any of that sparse travel food! I'd have to stay behind!" It's so disappointing sometimes because it ruins the fantasy of it all. *sigh*

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have that, and also a phobic terror of being dirty. I couldn't go on any adventure without reasonable access to bathing. This is why the novel I'm currently writing is urban fantasy, so I can better lose myself in the storyline while I write it; I can cope with being threatened with horrible death, but not a lack of soap.

I always loved the food porn descriptions in Redwall. But looking back on it, if they haven't got any beasts of burden (there's a horse in Redwall, but other domesticated species are never brought up again) then where do they get the cream to make all the delicious pastries and puddings?

I do sympathize, OP. I can't drink anything with carbonation (soda, beer, champagne), or eat olives, prawns, meat fat, onions, or raisins. At all.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Greensap milk - described in Outcast as the stuff you get from mashing up a type of root which apparently only grows in Mossflower. Real roots do produce white fluid, but I doubt it'd turn to cheese.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow! I don't think i ever picked up on that, because I didn't reread Outcast all that much- it made me sad and a little frustrated as a young kid that Veil wasn't allowed to be a good guy. Long Patrol was my absolute favourite.

god fucking dammit, self!

[identity profile] seashadows.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you're not alone. :) I'm autistic, too, and a super-taster to boot, so a good number of vegetables either feel disgustingly mushy or taste too bitter for me to eat. Bleh...all that cream in Redwall...I wouldn't eat it, either!

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's cooked veg that gets me. I can eat enough types of vegetables raw to prevent myself getting scurvy, but when cooked they feel slimy enough that I can't eat them. I also dislike fish, and since Mossflower doesn't have vitamin supplements, I'd probably end up with a serious protein lack, unless I ended up resorting to cannibalism.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well you were born autistic...in Redwall-land you might also have been born the wrong species! Imagine if you were a stoat or a rat. They'd have to kill you!

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Only if you suck at being a rat or stoat. If you're a smart rat or stoat, you either get good enough at being stereotypically sneaky to escape, or you play up the ugly-cute and don't antagonise random mice.
