They're awesome! Many of the great heroes are mice. That one is Matthias. My favorite of the series was Mossflower.

If you're irked by absolutes (eg, certain animal species were just born bad, and can neither go against their wicked nature or be redeemed) then you might want to think twice.

Yeah, I know it's for kids. But I think it's fucked up that stoats and rats and the like are destined to be rotten and villainous. It's too *ideologically loaded* for me to just overlook.

Well, there was Romsca the...I think she was a stoat? pirate captain in The Bellmaker, and Blaggut the searat in...shoot, can't remember which one that was, but they were kinda outside the binary. And there was Veil, in Outcast of redwall, who quite frankly I still can't figure him out altogether. Also Gingivere the wildcat in Mossflower. Also the crazy cannibal otter in Legend of Luke. And there were those two rats in Long Patrol who weren't so much bad as kinda dim and ended up just leaving before the battle.

Several of the mook-type vermin weren't exactly evil, just dim and/or unlucky enough to get roped into doing evil. Poor buggers, I always liked them better than the woodlanders - tell me straight-faced that a ferret is not cuter than a hare, I dare you.

I always liked the dim and funny vermin too. I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason those two rats ended up leaving before the battle is because Brian Jacques ended up liking them too much himself to let them die lol

For the record, not all vermin in the series are bad. On the other hand, not all woodlanders are good. Brian Jacques created some characters who would normally be considered good until they turned their back on their own kind. The same goes for vermin. As hikari87 stated, there have been several vermin characters who turned out to be good.
