Exactly...I get that they "both changed" but in the end, it's just him going back to his ways and her succumbing to "well, we can't be together unless I wear these pants that are a children's size 0"

I know it's supposed to be campy and fun, but all things considered, it's pretty messed up.

Oh, will you and others like that PLEASE stop using that fucking line? I'm sorry, I can't take it anymore. Someone says something you don't like? "You sound white." Someone expresses a view of feminism that doesn't involve treating men like shit? "Fucking misogynistic neckbeard mansplainer!"

And people wonder why I don't call myself a feminist.

It's annoying as shit, that's for sure. I love when people like that think that by me not dignifying their stupid insult with an answer is an automatic win for them. I still try to ignore people who think that being louder or meaner makes your point more valid.

If I may take an analogous situation from within Catholicism? St Francis de Sales, in a time of great corruption and scandal in the Church, said, "But I'm here among you to prevent something far worse for you. While those who give scandal are guilty of the spiritual equivalent of murder, those who take scandal — who allow scandals to destroy their faith — are guilty of spiritual suicide."

Feminism is important, and rejecting it as a woman is basically hobbling yourself, caging yourself, commiting idealogical suicide. Yes, it is annoying and irritating, even harmful, that people say and do stupid things while calling themselves feminists. Even worse when they say and do stupid things, saying that these things are feminist and motivated by feminism. But if you allow their behaviour to drive you away from feminism, if you reject the label 'feminist' because of some people, then you are doing that to yourself, and you are leaving them as the spokespeople for feminism, further harming others.

And you are leaving yourself in a vulnerable position, unable to properly stand up for your rights and proper respect, because you will always be in danger of "What are you, a feminist?" or "Why do you care? You're not a feminist are you?". It is not a dirty word to be ashamed of, but if you treat it as one you risk everyone who knows you treating it as one when talking to you. And how can you argue for your own rights when you have declared the very idea of your having them an insult?

Different anon here. I don't call myself a feminist. It's not completely because of the extremists, but I honestly don't like putting labels on myself. I don't really like labels period and I haven't for a very long time now. To me there is being descriptive of fact (I am a woman) and sticking one self into a stereotyped hole (pretty much any -ist). Rarely do I follow such labels to the letter and I make exceptions according to how I feel about each situation. I am who I am. Except that doesn't mean I don't hold some of the same morals and values that a lot of people who call themselves feminists do.

Just because the anon above doesn't call themselves a feminist doesn't mean they don't share the same ideals and rejects them.

I want to point out that while I was always upset by her having to change for him, I remember wondering how the HECK those pants fit her. It bugged me the entire time. They're not just a size 0, they're like a size -10. Ridiculous.

This. When I saw this movie as a kid, my mom made a point of telling my sister and I that we shouldn't ever change ourselves for a man. I was like, whatever, 'cause I just liked the music, but kudos to mom for trying to teach us something. (She also would never let us watch any of those 70's "tittie shows" because they were degrading - which i so didn't get at the time, but go mom.)
