Agreed. Even my child-self found it unsettling that she had to change for a guy. (and why were my parents letting a child watch this?!)

They all seemed like the people who'd get knocked up at 19 and work dreary jobs forever after high school. We just saw the best year of their life. It can only go downhill from here.

i've always been under the impression that Grease was supposed to be a parody of movies that present messages like that seriously. I mean they ride off in a flying car together for crying out loud.

I don't think it's suppose to be all that happy. It's just a reason to sing a final song. I mean, they get together with the promise of sex and all but even in the movie it's not like a great love story.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I remember watching it for the first time when I was a kid and being shocked that it ended like that.

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people think Sandy changed for him. Danny spends half the movie trying to become the guy he was when he was with her (joining all those sports) and she finally sees she is different with him as well. They brought out aspects of each other that others didn't.

People really take the "OMG, how sexist!" thing too far sometimes.....

Ironic

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ironic it was posted on the day the actress who played "cha cha" died (remember, she dances with Danny at the prom?).

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think the message was that they both changed? Danny became a jock for Sandy too.

Though I think that in general taking anything regarding this movie seriously is a mistake. I enjoy it because of "yay happy music fun time!" I mean, how long did it take Rizzo to realize "Oh wait, I'm not pregnant, HELL YEAH?"

Nah, I found it creepy as well.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that was sexist. That was another time, when the message "you have to accept your sexuality" was very important and necessary. And he tries to change for her, too. He's in some sport team and that's why he's still wearing that jacket.

Also, LOL at Lorenzo Lamas XD He's so nerd in that movie...

[identity profile] universejuice.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that bothers me is not that Sandy changed for Danny, because others mentioned that Danny tried changing as well. He was totally willing to become a new man for her--and it was implied that Danny was, in large part, faking his tough-guy persona for the sake of his friends, and I suspect he might have been closer to his real self if he'd gotten to really go out and become a jock.

So the moral of the story is not "change yourself for a guy," nor even "change yourself for love." The moral is "change yourself so all your friends and the people around you will still think you're cool." And that just irks me to no end.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
This movie made me angry and disappointed and frustrated, I couldn't stand it.

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
This always bothered me, too. And I've never seen the changes that Danny makes as being comporable in any way- joining the track team =/= total personality overhaul.

Also, I'm pretty sure I hate every single song on that soundtrack. But that's a whole other thing.

[identity profile] romanticide-xd.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I understand the movie backwards but I always thought at the end both changed, each becoming a little more like the other. Sandy becoming less represed but still the good person she is, while Danny leaving behind his "pose" of casanova, though guy.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can't pretend to know what the usual consensus is because damn, I hate this movie and only watched it once. I agree that the end is gross, but I'm probably the wrong person to ask.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Folks might also be interested to know that in the musical, Sandy also punches out the cheerleader that was interested in Danny to prove how "bad" she is. It's even worse in the original Chicago version, where Patty and Sandy are both competing for Danny's heart and Danny's just using Patty to make Sandy jealous for him.

So basically if anything, you can be a total dick to girls and still win one in the end.
Of course not that this justifies it, yet Jacobs and Casey's intention for the old musical (before Broadway watered it down and the movie did further) was to show how "bad" and "real" kids were, so the greasers and Pink Ladies were all a bunch of foul-mouthed jerks, and for the "good girl" to go bad in a reversal of the movies where the bad boy goes good. Still messed up though, yeah, things considered. I personally always found it weird how they insisted Jan was "FAT" in the film, when Jamie Donnelly's one of the much thinner actresses that have played her.

mehhhh both sides of this argument are already getting trotted out in this thread

I just had to throw in my SUPREME nostalgia for this movie, even with all the wtf in it. Especially with how dirty it is, and they showed it to us in grade school (?!!!) but it was fine because SO MUCH of it went right over our heads. I was totally skipping around my house at maybe 8 or 9 singing about how all the chicks are gonna cream for my car (/riveting tale chap)

I've been a Sandy type my entire life, but especially when I was a kid. I hated the ending the Grease, because yeah, to me it sent this message like, "You can't stay sweet and innocent if you want boys to like you."

The only disturbing thing about this movie are the 30-year-old actors playing high school students.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this movie so bad for that ending.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe this hasn't been said yet but...one thing to add is that this movie was set in the 50's as a tribute [at least, that's what I've heard said about the movie specifically] to the 50's. Considering what a horrible time the 50's was for everyone, can you really expect something that's a 'tribute' to that to really be all that empowering?

That aside, as everyone said - Danny also changed for her, and hey. It's a musical - it's supposed to be light and fluffy, and not particularly serious.

[identity profile] hyper-amychao.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I seem to remember seeing a stage version where at the end they all remember they're still kids, basically, and go home to watch the Mickey Mouse Club.

...Or did I make that up?

Danny changed more than Sandy. BUT THAT'S OK, RIGHT? They both tried to be the person the other wanted and Danny spent more time trying to be different.

It's funny how everyone always forget this so they can shout about how creepy it was for Sandy to try to fit in with his clique.
