She owned up to it and went back to high school. Rizzo didn't let anyone boss her around, not even other women. They showed Sandy that there was more to life.
And Sandy liked it. Even the ending duet she sings with Danny talks about how she has to be true to her heart, and he admits he has to shape up. It's very clearly that Sandy's stepped up and is the one in charge of the relationship. For the first time, he saw Sandy as a woman, and one he'd have to work for. One who was worth working for--a keeper, not just some sweetheart whose pants he wanted to get into or someone he thought was cute. He talks about proving that her faith is justified. The entire song, Sandy leads the duet. And as much as he ogles her near the beginning? He spends more time singing to her face, looking her in the eye in the later parts. She's someone he can genuinely respect because she knows what she wants. Are there sexual undertones? Yes. But their words also mean things.
She's genuinely enjoying herself. It's not just about him. It's about her, too, and knowing what she wants (to be more than a housewife, if her change in demeanor is anything to go by). And working for it. But she also made it entirely clear that as much as she wants him, and as much as she isn't gonna give up on him, he has to work for her, too. She realizes a relationship is compromise, and that there's more to life, and dammit, she is going to seize her life and do what she wants.
Maybe it's just me, but she always seemed like she had the more aggressive and fun girl under her passive and pure demeanor that was waiting to come out, but she held that in check because it wasn't Proper. So she finally sees that, forget what's proper. She can be in charge of her life.
It's also my headcanon that they pack up what they want to keep in the back of the car and head from town to town, Danny doing odd jobs to get them there (Sandy doing what she can) until they see as much of the US as they can.
