I don't get why people think Sandy changed for him. Danny spends half the movie trying to become the guy he was when he was with her (joining all those sports) and she finally sees she is different with him as well. They brought out aspects of each other that others didn't.

People really take the "OMG, how sexist!" thing too far sometimes.....

I wrote something about this movie recently and thinking about it it surprised me to remember that Danny actually does a lot more changing than Sandy does throughout the movie. It's basically a given that he ought to change throughout, he's sometimes a dick but she's more the judgy one, he joins a team and actually letters in something. Sandy pretty much stays herself until that scene where everyone's watching the drag race Danny wins and she's left out, and that's the first time she makes her statement about being different for him.

Yes at the end he's the one throwing off his letterman sweater rather than her pulling on a skirt over her skintight pants, but I don't think we're supposed to assume he goes back to the guy he was at the bonfire. He's still going to try to be a good guy for her.

I think one of the main problems with the ending is just that Danny's change is more gradual (becoming not-a-dick, and someone that Sandy would actually like to be around), whereas Sandy's seems to happen literally overnight. The "lesson" with her is supposed to be, "it's okay to loosen up, and let your hair down! have fun!" but it just comes off more like, "CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF FOR YOUR MAN."

Definitely not the intention, but I can understand why some people see it that way. Especially since Sandy's change is way more memorable, and Danny throws his letter-jacket off-camera.

Exactly. They both found there was more to who they were than they knew, but Sandy's, being somewhat quicker gets taken the wrong way.

I always thought the dramatic clothes change was more of a prank she and Frenchie were playing on the guys. Like, "Hey, I wonder what Danny's reaction would be if you wore this?" The message was definitely what you said. That it's ok for Sandy to loosen up and have fun, which is what I got out of it. I doubt she wore clothes like that on a daily basis and probably found a good middle ground between her good girl look and adding a bit of flash to it.

And the whole song ("You're the One that I want") seems to be Sandy telling Danny that he needs to change for her. That she needs a man who she knows is going to treat her right. And her thinking isn't wrong considering Danny was a dick at the beginning of the movie. I thought it was her way of saying, "I want to be with you, but only if you treat me right and not the way you did at the beginning of the school year."
