mehhhh both sides of this argument are already getting trotted out in this thread

I just had to throw in my SUPREME nostalgia for this movie, even with all the wtf in it. Especially with how dirty it is, and they showed it to us in grade school (?!!!) but it was fine because SO MUCH of it went right over our heads. I was totally skipping around my house at maybe 8 or 9 singing about how all the chicks are gonna cream for my car (/riveting tale chap)

Carousel has huuuuuuuuuuuge issues, dude. Like I totally get your point, but of ALL the musicals you could've thrown out there, holy goddamn

I think the point is that Carousel (and Show Boat, and Guys and Dolls, and West Side Story) have at least semi-literate scores by people who are trying to tell a story. Grease is basically a bunch of parody rock songs and the story is just an excuse to sing them; most of the comments upthread from its defenders attest to that.

Carousel is f'ed the hell up, but at least it has Richard Rodgers going for it.
