A rebellion against the Mad King, 15 years of Robert ruling, a huge civil war, just so we can go back to the Mad King's daughter and her buddies ruling Westeros?

I seriously doubt this will ever happen. I would bet every penny I own that GRRM never considered it for a minute. I mean, this is the man that killed off the man widely considered the main protagonist of the first book, just like that. A man who likes to subvert, invert, and screw over as many tropes as he invokes. I'm honestly half expecting Dany/Aegon/Whoever to finally be in King's Landing, ready to sit on the Iron Throne, when ninja!Arya pops up, goes, "All men die," shanks a bitch, and then peels off her face and leaves.

That would be all kinds of awesome as an ending. ^^ I agree with you, I doubt that GRRM would end the series with such a cheap cliché. But I am slightly worried about the special place he is giving Jon, Daenerys, Tyrion. Ned looked like the main protagonist for one book. These three have been playing main protagonist for four books (since they weren't really in AFfC). I just hope that GRRM will be as ready to kill them off (or get some other horrible fate) as he was with Ned, Renly, Robb, and other characters who at times looked like they were going to play a big role. But maybe he really is such a troll that he only shapes up Daenerys as his über main character so he can kill her off in an even more surprising way than Ned.

The reason I like the special place that those three have in the narrative, and why I'm not so keen to see them unceremoniously killed off is that they are the characters who, in that universe (and this one, really), should be powerless. They aren't supposed to be the heroes because they're bastards and women and dwarves. I like that the narrative keeps stripping power from the rich, well-born, handsome men who have been raised to expect it, and keeps revealing harmless old ladies and cripples and low-born pirates and little girls as the real powerhouses.

[identity profile] linndechir.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm perfectly cool with that. I'm especially cool with Jon - as long as he stays just some lord's bastard, and not the prince's long lost son and child of his true love and messiah who will save the world. I'm even cool with Tyrion getting his special place in the narrative because he really is an incredible character, no matter how boring his chapters were in ADwD.
But I disagree completely on Daenerys. This series has so many great female characters who, in their own way, become powerful and overcome the limitations their world puts on them. And they do it with the weapons they have, every one of them in their own way. The same was true for Daenerys in the beginning, but somehow she lost this aspect of being the powerless underdog more and more when she got her dragons. And even though she can't control them, she is still RIDING A DRAGON now. She's verging away from "powerless underdog who somehow ends up fighting/using the system" to something entirely different. So, there are women I want to have a special place in the narrative, but Daenerys is not really one of them anymore. I find Arya, Sansa, Asha, Margaery, and others way more interesting, and I also want them to succeed much more than Daenerys. Buuuut that's just me, we all have our preferences.
Also, let's not forget that GRRM is, if anything, cruelly realistic. And even though the powerless sometimes succeed and win, just as often they fail and are cast down. All three of them coming out on top would just be too much.

And isn't it kind of unfair to put all the rich, well-born, and sometimes handsome men in one big pot? Because this series' powerful lords are all so incredibly different from each other that they deserve better than that, and I really hope that not all of them will end up dead or powerless or otherwise defeated. At this point GRRM is almost overdoing the "let's kill/maim all the great lords" thing.
