Okay, if you want to dress up as a famous person who is black, painting your skin to look like them is not unusual. My country has absolutely NO concept of blackface. We've never done it historically and most people have never even heard of it. Just like in my country "KKK" is the initials of a famous climbing club and my mom got yelled at by American tourists for having racist t-shirts. It was hillarious because it shows how America-centric most people are, I think that assuming blackface is automatically offensive everywhere is about the same level of stupid as assuming "KKK" on a white t-shirt can't possibly mean something else in a non-english speaking country.

Just dropping here to add that yeah, in my country when school plays required you to have a different tone of skin you did it (be it that the character was black, white, or just paler or tanner than you), but when I mentioned this to some American friends they were kind of baffled.

That is honestly pretty cool. Meanwhile in America, I'm paranoid that people will think me racist for wondering if I should use makeup to make me browner if I cosplay as a character who is a reptile. Is it racist if I'm going as not only a fictional character but a fictional species? Or is the makeup alone enough to ruin it?

I'm glad that isn't an issue everywhere, gotta say.
