I'm sorry you felt triggered. I know I was while reading people's reactions to Amy's death. she meant a lot to me.

most of fandom freaks out when anyone talks frankly about the nastier sides of mental illness; i.e., self-injury, alcoholism, ED, what have you. I'm not sure why that is. in my purely anecdotal experience, I'd say it's because most fangirls are diagnosed with much milder disorders and don't have much experience dealing with the really illogical and fucked up shit. it's very sad.

I hope you're feeling better.

I think a lot of the problem (particularly in fandom) might also stem from self-diagnosis and how the grittier sides of mental illness are treated in most mainstream media. Self-injury, for example, is often treated as a joke and so when it comes up in serious conversation, many people will simply disregard it as attention-whoring.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm used to this and the public perception of these disorders. It's pretty much discouraging to sit in front of the class and just look away when people just say ''LOL THEN WHY DO U EAT IN THE FIRST PLACE IF UR GONNA THROW UP, THATS FUCKING DISGUSTING EEW'', ''WHY WOUDL YOU WANT TO LOOK LIKE A SKELETON THATS SO STUPID'' when the psych teacher talks about eating disorders in college.

I'm doing pretty good, I hope you are as well! Feel free to friend me if you want. But yeah, I expected more understanding because of how it seems more people in fandom/the internet in general deal with anxiety problems or depression, but people are quick to just judge and say LOL UR FUCKED UP. It's very thoughtless and hurtful imo.

[identity profile] snowtroublehere.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
probably because people start talking about hugely personal things like that on public threads and that can be seen as attention seeking?

especially since we're only just coming out of the phase where everyone self-diagnosed themselves with aspergers and anxiety and depression just to be hipster some dumb shit

idk man i've seen way too many people throw around mental illnesses as if they're some kind of "get out of jail free" card so people being cynical isn't something that's COMPLETELY BEYOND UNDERSTANDING

[identity profile] rapi.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I can see that, but I'd agree much more if this wasn't some kind of anon post...Secrets are exactly so that people can get out thoughts and feelings they otherwise wouldn't be able to share. -Fandom- secret might not be the best place, but what can you do.

[identity profile] snowtroublehere.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
eh secret or no, it's still out there publicly and people can still be sceptical towards it

i forever maintain that the internet isn't a support group or a mass therapist so you shouldn't treat it as such

[identity profile] rapi.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
yeah but there's a difference between skeptical and LOLURFUCKEDUP. I'm over it, I don't really mind, I just think it's not as cool as some people seem to think it is. The internet sure isn't that, but hauling one's ass to therapy in the midst of things can be hard if not damn near impossible depending on the situation. It just helps to have people who can relate to you, though it's very true this is a really general place and there are places that are much more fit for support than F!s, obviously.

[identity profile] snowtroublehere.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
well it's a given that people are going to be even more dicky on the internet than irl and maybe they're frustrated with irl situations so they project? and the assurance of anonymity makes them more inclined to be ruder than usual

talking out my ass here bro but it's possible
