Oh goody, this again.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever found an actual post with someone going "Platonic love doesn't exist!" Or is it just butthurt "I don't ship X pairing, so I'm going to whine about all shipping"?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow I was just settling in for the regular wank but this might actually pump it up to people leaving massive, TL;DR, passionate essays about why they feel like shipping fics are systematically oppressing their decision to [life choice here].

Gonna get some popcorn.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is less "Platonic love doesn't exist!" and more "OMG you don't ship X/X? What's wrong with you, clearly they are meant to be! You must be new/homophobic/racist/too stupid to live because you're opinion is different than my own."

I've gotten that quite a bit actually.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't just find a post about it, I lived this for a long time and experienced a lot of serious shit that would get people imprisoned for what they did to me and my friends if they didn't do it under the protection of religious institutions and non-accredited schools. There were parents, teachers, and other students between the ages of 14-18 involved in this. This isn't an internet opinion, this is reflective of attitudes that do exist in real life and subject real people to shit you can't even fucking imagine because of it.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
.... Friendship is illegal where you live?

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but I'm fairly sure that institutionalized bigotry and persecution based on mistaking friendship for homosexuality is.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't tell if this is troll bait or real hurt.

If this is real hurt, my sincere advice to you is to seek therapy because the way you're viciously throwing it around here to make a point in a debate about fanfic trends is out of tone and really, really sad. And will probably just end up hurting you more, unless you're one of those rare people who feels no sense of exposure or vulnerability from airing personal traumas like this.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really, really sorry that happened to you. Nobody deserves that. But it didn't happen just because they mistook friendship for romantic love, it happened because they were bigots who hated gay people. It's terrible that you got caught in the crossfire, and as someone who's also experienced homophobia from the adults that were supposed to be taking care of me, I cringed a little because yeah, it's horrible and I relate.

But people who were in that situation and were actually having romantic relationships with people who were the same gender really don't deserve that either.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, so you're saying it would have been okay for them to do that if it had in fact been homosexuality? :-( No one had the right to do that to you, but it's the homophobia that's the root of the problem, not someone mistaking a platonic relationship for an erotic one.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That really sucks. Really, awfully terrible and I'm very sorry that happened to you. I hope you're in a better situation now.
It throws a rather dark shadow on the fact that in lots of fictional works, insisting "We're just friends!" is code for "We're just too shy to admit we're in love!" Although I find it's more typically a heteronormative trope.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I don't experience Platonic love, but even I recognize that it exists in other people.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...so you're sexually attracted to all your family members and all your close friends? Or you don't love any of them?

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Love for family members isn't Platonic; it's philia, blood-love, or in some cases storge.

And all of my close friends either become like-family to me (philia and/or storge again), or I'm sexually/romantically attracted to them (eros), yes. I don't have plain Platonic agape without one of the others, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
If your friends become "like" family members to you I would call it "platonic love", though. Because, you know, they aren't REALLY your family. You just love them enough to consider them as such.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Most awkward family reunions ever.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think I just get annoyed because this complaint is being made about fandom. Like, fandom is Fantasyland. A lot of us 'ship in fandom precisely because we DON'T do shit like that in real life and don't suspect everyone of fucking everyone they even remotely like.
