People insist this? I've never seen anyone say it, probably because it implies the meaningful relationships one has with family members must be romantic.

But those same fans probably insist that other relationships in SPN are platonic, right?

I think the point is that people who insist that even people who insist everyone ship what they do aren't saying that no other close relationship can't be non-sexual.

I think you're overreaching. Your family could be your friend(s), but generally, friends are defined as people you're not related to and have a preexisting relationship with by blood. As in, they're not obligated to like you or put up with you in a non-paid, non-work setting, they just do it because they want to.

Although, if the OP does really include "family" there are more problems going on here than I can address.
