I literally don't understand this kind of thnking. Not that I think it's silly or anything; it's so...idk, I just don't get how someone can not multiship, I guess? How you can be so invested in just one pairing and never even touch all the wonderful fic and inventive scenarios out there?

But as long as you're not raining on other people's parade, then, you know, whatever.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so with you. I understand having a pairing that you like better than the others; I understand having some pairings that you just think don't work. But pitching a hissy just because someone wrote a pairing that isn't your OTP and uses one of the characters? IDGI.

Must be fun to be a whoreslut. Alas, some of us can't

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Multishipping makes you a slut. Welp. That one's new.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you imagine yourself as one half of the pairing?

Cause that's the only way this comment makes any sense.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no. I'm a slut; I enjoy having sex with multiple people for the sheer and simple joy of it. Whores charge and are usually only doing it for the money.

Not at all sure what that has to do with shipping, though.

Or candy! :D

...
(Sorry. It was too tempting to pass up.)

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So multishipping fictional characters (or even real people for that matter) makes you a filthy skanky ho? lolz I haven't heard that one before. *eyeroll*

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well even though OTP means One True Pairing, in most instances it does not mean "the only pairing I will read." Sometimes it means that (you can see a few people who use it that way in this thread) but it typically means "pairing I like."
Personally I relate more to OP regarding ships I just don't like, versus feeling like character x must always be with character y. Sometimes it really sucks when a story is otherwise really good but OH MY GOD THAT PAIRING I HATE IT. It kinda ruins the enjoyment to have an otherwise good plot peppered with romance scenes between two people you can't stand seeing together.
(I also agree with the people above and you that it's shitty to try to ruin other peoples' fun, even if it's a legitimate feeling.)

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I get having pairings you hate; admittedly I don't have many, but I get it. Especially if there's a particular character you can't stand or who make each other really annoying. It's the exclusivity that puzzles me.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"It kinda ruins the enjoyment to have an otherwise good plot peppered with romance scenes between two people you can't stand seeing together."

Yeah, this. Especially if the fic also goes out of the way to preach how the "rival ship" you like sucks. I ship a lot of canon so I've run into this a few times.

Dear non-canon shippers: You can write your canon defying OTP without a long, OOC breakup sequence beforehand. Srsly.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This - just change the 'canon defying OTP' to 'pairing defying OTP' and you've got it exactly.

[identity profile] stuck4aname.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree 100%. I'll never understand this "my ship" mentality because multishipping is so much fun. I don't get why some A/B shippers automatically see A/C or B/C as rival ships.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in this weird spot, where in most fandoms I'm like "yay unique ships and viewpoints!" but there are occasions where I find myself strangely attached to one pairing and not interested in any that collide with it.

I dunno... maybe it has to do with me mainly being a canon shipper. In some universes, I can't see things having gone another way and the characters having wound up with somebody else. In other pairings, the characters are so inseparable that them not being a couple feels off to me. Icon extremely related to the later.

Either way though, pretty much echoing "as long as you don't flame other people you can like what you like" sentiment.

"In some universes, I *can* see things having gone another way and the characters having wound up with somebody else."

Dangit

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I...sort of understand where OP's coming from, albeit I tend to do it in reverse. Namely there's ususally one or two pairings with any given character that I just cannot *stand*. For whatever reason, the pairing[s] just rub me the wrong way. I'm guessing that only shipping one pairing is a lot like that - only, it's just one pairing that strikes you the right way, where as the rest just...don't.

[identity profile] spacefragments.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
because we get everything we could want out of one ship?

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
But how? Not every ship has everything, and different ships will have subtly different dynamics based on the characters, and...

I don't know. I hope I didn't come across as hostile. :(

[identity profile] spacefragments.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
in short? i don't care about the other ships. i want something specific, and if i can get it out of one ship, then i don't care to look anywhere else. simple as. it doesn't mean that i automatically hate or look down on the ships that aren't my otp.

i seriously doubt it's that difficult to understand. i multiship in one fandom and otp in the other, neither of those positions are a mystery to me.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand only being interested in one pairing. I'm a multi-shipper, but I've had some fandoms where I definitely preferred one pairing over others. But I don't understand getting so invested in a ship that you can't stand other pairings. Like, it's one thing to be less likely to click on a fic if you're not into the pairing, but I don't get it when people avoid other pairings out of principle.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. When I see a pairing that I've never seen before, my first thought is oooh! I wonder how they pulled this one off!

[identity profile] cafune.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
it depends on the fandom for me. in spn, for example, dean/cas is the only ship i like (although john/jo is growing on me) and i don't like to read them in other pairings, regardless of how good the story is. same with sheryl/alto in macross frontier. in cg, for example though, i'll read lelouch/suzaku, lelouch/shirley, lelouch/euphemia, euphemia/suzaku, shirley/suzaku, and pretty much any other pairing under the sun. same in marvel or gundam uc.

of course, canon affects the ability to multiship as well, for me. spn is so all about dependent unhealthy relationships that i'm just inclined to one pairing, while cg is such a tangled incestuous clusterfuck of a story i can't imagine not multishipping.
