It makes me sad when people insist that any meaningful same-gender relationship must be completely platonic (usually while not applying those same standards to meaningful man/woman relationships) or else you're a brainless shipper.

It's kind of unfair.

Not to mention that I think the differing standards in media re: same-gender and het relationships is actually part of why this happens. I feel like a lot of the time when people say "X/Y slash couple did Z, how can you not think they're in love!" what that's coming from is not a place of "Z would never happen between friends IRL," but a place of "Z would almost never happen in fiction between a man and a woman without it being a signal from TPTB that there is more than friendship going on."

I know that's definitely true in a lot of cases for me. (Which, IMO, means that there should be both more non-het couples AND more truly platonic male/female friendships in media...)

Agreed. And I think, like... assuming the characters involved are intended to be totally straight, which usually they are, of course a moment of closeness is canonically going to be a friendship thing. But supposing those characters weren't straight... there's a chance it would mean something different, especially if that moment isn't naturally happening in real life, but put there by a writer. So I think a lot of the "slash fans are delusional" mindset comes from straight people that look at it as "if I did that with another man/woman, of course it would only be a friendship thing, ever."

It just... doesn't work that way for everybody. And some of the people it doesn't work for want to see characters that feel the same way they do.
