THIS THIS THIS DEAR GOD THIS. Hey, I'm all for romance, and I love a good sexy pairing or whatever, but seriously, people need to stop acting like friendship is less meaningful.

Please point us towards anyone, anywhere saying that friendship is less meaningful than romance.

Seconding the anon. When and where the fuck have you even seen this, what the actual fuck.

Wow, OK, you both need to chill; I wasn't accusing anyone in particular of this heinous crime. There's just a trend in fandom to 'improve' upon friendships by making them romantic/sexual, and sometimes that really works, but other times it seems to imply that the relationship's not good enough as it is because friendship is somehow less strong than romance or something. Or people get mad that relationships stay platonic in canon, even if they're really strong & meaningful, just because romance seems to be (SOMETIMES) like the ultimate form of relating. It pops up in every fandom once in a while and personally I don't like it sometimes, but it's not the end of the world.

I'll chill when we stop getting 52365736434 copies of this same goddamned fucking secret a year. Jesus, I'm so sick of this sickeningly faux-alarmed, "I'm so sorry you don't have any good friends and are obsessed with sex or something," crap.

Look, this is actually really simple. If I prefer a pairing as friends, the friendship is going to be something I think is "better." (More "pure," less "complicated," whatever the fuck justifications people have for friends-only pairings.) But if I think a pairing is HOT, or would work better as a romantic pairing (which also probably translates to finding the romantic pairing erotic in some way), then I'm going to consider THAT better, and possibly be annoyed if it stays platonic in canon.

There's always going to be SOMEONE who thinks the latter, thus the fact that there's always people who think the romantic pairing option is better, for any given pairing. That doesn't mean there aren't people who would prefer that pairing as friends. But again, there's most likely fewer of those for any given pairing, because people are erotic beings...and given a FANTASY situation, most people are going to try on the romantic fantasy for size to see if they like it. And if you do, friendship alone is often not going to seem like "enough." It's like people pretend the impulses toward sex and romantic ways of relating AREN'T some of our strongest social instincts.

Not hard to figure out how this happens. Yet people bitch about it like it's a quality totally unique to fandom (which is CLEARLY full of friendless losers or something).

And if you've ever been one of the few and lonely in a fandom that actually ships a pairing that the rest of fandom is GA-GA for as friends-only because that's so much better, etc., then this whole idea that fandom always shuns friendship pairings is even more obnoxious, really.
