Yes, Snape's love was so noble that he treated her son worse than dirt. His love was so noble he was willing to let her husband and son die (it doesn't matter that he changed his mind, the fact that he was willing in the first place says a lot about her character). His love was so noble that he only regretted using a slur against her because it was against her. He believed she was an exception but actually believed the pureblood crap.

I think the scene worked in the movie because a lot of the worst of the baggage wasn't there. In the movie, it really did read like noble and self-sacrificing unrequited love. In the books, though, Snape comes across as an obsessed jerk with serious issues who likes to bully children.

" His love was so noble that he only regretted using a slur against her because it was against her. He believed she was an exception but actually believed the pureblood crap."

This. I hate when people forget this about Snape: he was using a slur against Lily, and regretted upsetting her with it but carried on with those views, thus insulting not only her but her parents, her sister, and all the people she knew before she was in Hogwarts (who would have been non-magical). It's like calling a black friend "nigger" and then apologising for it but continuing to hold racist views. And there's no real evidence as far as I can tell to show that Snape renounced those views over the course of his life. He's as much a racist as the Malfoys are.

Well, Snape did tell the portrait in Dumbledore's office not to call Hermione a mudblood, so he might have changed his views by the end of the series.

Or it reminded him of how he lost Lily.

[identity profile] crazyponko.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. I can see it being either. Or both.

[identity profile] ceasefire.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, could've been both. Not gonna deny that he was a fairly complex character, but I also think that his memory of Lily and the regret of what could have been was probably the biggest factor driving his later actions, which is why I thought it was probably more the Lily thing.

[identity profile] crazyponko.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. I figure he probably had a lot of time after Lily died to reflect on his racist views.
